Temporary visa renewal?
My husband's temporary visa will be expiring in January. Can you renew your visa at the León ims office, or do you have to go to SMA? I understand that you no longer have to cross the border to renew your visa?

Thanks,
Laura

RE: Temporary visa renewal?
Crossing the border is only done if all you have is a 180 day Tourist Permit (FMM). A resident Visa (Temporal or Permanente) are renewed with INM

RE: Temporary visa renewal?
I have never actually spoken to anyone that can confirm that the Leon office does anything regarding visas. I would love to know if they did.

At any rate, answer above asks the most critical question. If your husband has a tourist visa, I believe that he will have to leave the country before it expires. If he has a residente temporal, then he can renew it here.

Whether he has to do that in SMA or can do it in Leon is a question I would love to know the answer to.

RE: Temporary visa renewal?
I'll let you guys know when I find out more info. My husband only has a tourist visa, and in the past had to go across the border, but the last time we were in León I believe they said that the rules were changing and that you would be able to renew your tourist visa by just paying an additional fee and renewing your paperwork at their office.

Sonia Diaz in San Miguel will be able to answer your questions and help with the process.

I got my temporary resident in Leon about a block or two before the Costco seemed much easier than SMA and less crowded also has all the small businesses in the plaza for copies or forms or advice.

RE: Temporary visa renewal?
I haven't heard anything about a rule change and cannot find anything about it on the Internet. Otoh, I have "heard" that there are "people" who will take care of it for a fee.

Good to get confirmation about the Leon office. Wish I had known before I spent so much time and money in sma getting my rt.

You can definitely do it in Leon, but I don't have details as to where it is. I just started mine in SMA, but to be honest I plan to go to Leon next year for renewal instead. One friend who has used both says everything is much quicker in Leon.

RE: Temporary visa renewal?
Hi ixobel and welcome to the forum!

You are getting a residente temporal that you want to renew next year, right?

It's not clear if the original author is talking about obtaining resident status or renewing a tourist visa. I think you still have to leave the country to renew the 180 day tourist visa.

RE: Temporary visa renewal?
Yes, right. I had (wrongly) assumed the OP was talking about a temporary residency. I don't think there is any way to renew a tourist visa from within the country.
