IMSS vs. Seguro Popular?

There are two reasons I have been paying for IMSS instead of going the Seguro Popular route but I am not sure either are valid reasons as I have limited knowledge of Seguro Popular.

1. IMSS does apply wherever you are in Mexico such as an accident while traveling.
2. IMSS is said to have very good specialists available on a national basis. For example, someone who lives in Queretaro was treated in Mexico City for a serious eye injury.

My IMSS coverage expires in September so I'd appreciate your input.

I imagine both are equal for emergencies and unscheduled outpatient visits. But for "big stuff" and treating chronic problems on an ongoing basis, IMSS has the personal testimonials backing their services. They also provide some long-term care, after a crisis, and you're processed in "the system". Whether IMSS will come through for you (or anyone else) when the chips are down always remains to be seen. But even in the U.S., without an advocate, money, and spare time, you can easily fall through the cracks in the insurance company-driven, managed-care health care system.

I am sticking with IMSS. They have a history going back to the first clinic in Nueva Le?n in 1946. I have been very happy with my care there. Three years ago, I was advised to have a procedure at the specialist hospital in Le?n. It was right after the Christmas Holidays when they were very busy, and it was taking some time to get it scheduled. Because I was on a time-schedule, I didn't wait and opted for sooner private treatment, but had I waited IMSS would not only have covered the procedure but for all my transportation costs as well. Though I cannot speak to their specialist care, their routine care is excellent, in my opinion.
