New ruins open to the public in Guanajuato

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE ? A new major archaeological site will open to the public as of Tuesday, Feb 15.

?Ca?ada de la V?rgen,? the remains of an ancient and unknown civilization was inaugurated for public viewing last Friday by Guanajuato state Gov. Manuel Oliva.

?We want to preserve this historical heritage and share it with the whole world,? Oliva told a small group of government officials that included National Anthropology and History Institute (INAH) director Alfonso de Maria y Campos and municipal Mayor Lucy Nu?ez, as well as property owner Regina Thomas von Bohlen, who donated the 16 hectares of the site to the state in 2002. The site was part of her property, the ?Ca?ada de la V?rgen? (Virgin?s Gorge) Hacienda, after which the ruins are named.

The site is now Guanajuato state?s most important pre-Hispanic archaeological site. INAH archaeologists have found 120 more sites in the surrounding area. [FULL STORY]
