What are these for? They're all over Gto.
I see these everywhere in photos of Gto. The thing I'm looking at is in the lower left corner of the photo. If they're in good shape, they have a water faucet at the top.

In the late 19th century water became "public", i.e. the city began piping water into town. These water fountains were where the citizens could draw water.

In the office of SIMAPAG [in front of the Comercial Mexicana] where water bills are paid they have?/had?* a collection of historical fotos of water distribution in GTO that are very interesting.
* I haven't been there in over two years. |

They are still there. Most interesting to me is the photo mural that depicts the water carriers -- men with large clay ollas (about the size of today's butane tanks) that the men carried from the plaza fountains into the neighborhoods. Photo was taken by William H. Jackson, 19th century pioneer photographer of the Old West.
