Past Marfil on the old highway to Leon on the left, vicinity of Siemens. Two salvage yards adjacent. Both are more for metals than wood but probably worth a visit.
Best source for old doors are found in San Miguel. If you choose SMA let me know and i will send a google map of the store. |

There is a wonderful store in Dolores that carries a large variety of older wood pieces and products.
Find the great BBQ restaurant Rincón de Los Sabores, on the way out of Dolores on the road to SMA, and this place is across the divided street. Just a block on same side and street from Mexhapati, ceramic art shop. Neat stuff, doors included. |

RE: junkyard in guanajuato?
Assuming this forum open for observations, I think it is great that we are able to contribute all our experiences and every aspect of improving others lives or making things a little easier for them, while sometimes even asking them to stop and think by sharing tales, songs, suggestions or folklore about the journey they may be considering undertaking. So even though the subject might appear irrelevant to the topic at hand, the person we are attempting to help has the choice of selecting what information is relevant for them personally. That is why I would like to say here that I appreciate reading about any good restaurants that are available along the road we are traveling, while searching for antique doors. I know this helps me personally, even though I may never look for doors but am always interested in a good BBQ restaurant. So thanks again to those who share the wealth of information that is discovered here.

RE: junkyard in guanajuato?
Also I don't know what your budget is but there are some shops on the Ancha San Antonio in San Miguel de Allende that sell some really neat doors. I am certain they want more than "new" quality prices for them. If I recall, they are across from the Institute Allende. (Pardon my spelling but if you can't find any of these landmarks, let me know and I'll try to find the proper spelling.) The trouble with looking for these is that they are now considered of high value and about the only way to furnish a home affordably is to maybe buy some old building being demolished. Then again, I may just be a cheapskate and some of these shops have a fair price. Just have to ask.
If you want a lot of them, I would personally try to get well out of the tourist mecca of the GTO/San Miguel/Dolores area because these shops are wise to the demand of the tourist dollar. Also and off-topic but remember how cold it gets here and insulate, insulate, insulate. |

Also, you may check out this location http://juanzaragoza.com/ . Juan (an artist) and his lovely wife, Daniela (an interior decorator) both deal with products sold by her father, Carlos Hernandez (in San Miguel de Allende) who used to carry a great deal of antique doors imported from the Michoacan area. Not certain about prices but perhaps contacting Carlos directly would provide you with direction of you are looking for.
There was also a place on the way toward Silao just outside of it seen on the bus route from GTO. Also, there is a place in San Miguel de Allende, on Hidalgo going toward the Fabrica, on the left before the bridge at Calle de la Luz, just a few doors in advance of the bridge. Prices not cheap but reasonable. (Note they are not in a natural state but put through a process of antiquing.) |
