I think we should organize and supply some serious pressure to these two stores. I think we all know they repackage expired meats and cheese. Don't We ? I have to be a freakin detective anytime I go in there. Today I was surprised to find Italian sausage. Got home it was Argentinian Sausage which I hate. These stores suck It would be nice to organize a protest at their front door.

The best kind of protest is to shop elsewhere. Support your local carneceria, fruteria and other grocers

Sadly, nothing is wasted in Mexico and these are not the only stores that do this. Same is true for lots of restaurants and other eateries. But Mexicans have always accepted an upset stomach and maybe a little fever as part of life, and trudge forward. You just do the best you can at selection, and trudge forward. :(

Hmm - curious. The only "Italian" sausage I've ever seen for sale here is at Superama in Leon and it is junk from Johnsonville [the company that injects something like CheeseWizz into hotdogs] To find Chorizo Argentino repacked and labled Italiano is a stretch - why bother? as the type is not known or popular here. Do you still have the label? If you want "real" Italian [hot or sweet] or German Brats you need to make friends with my pal Steve who makes his own but does not sell them. For some alternative salchidas try the artesanal varieties at the ISSEG market on the libre to Silao.

As far as a protest - jeez just imagine the fotos in the AM of a bunch of grumpy old gringos honking and hooting in front of the Mega demanding better hot dogs. The Mega of course being the proud provider of at least a score or more brands of Salchidas de Pavo -YUM

I'm sleepy so I won't get into why cheese is re-packaged. There is a reason.

If this is true, the repacking of expired meats and cheeses, it could be quite a dangerous health concern. MEGA and COMERCIAL are part of the COSTCO collective I believe, so contacting COSTCO, a Gringo store, may be the way to go here. I know the manager of the MEGA store, RAYMUNDO, and the manager of the COMERCIAL store, MEMO, both of whom are from DF and have always responded to any concerns I have voiced. I would recommend talking directly to both of them about these issues. For those of us who like good quality cheeses and DO eat meat, MEGA and COMERCIAL provide the vast array that I prefer, not any of the other stores in town, that I'm aware of.

I've seen cheeses go on sale when they've approached their expiration dates, but have personally never observed the re-packing of expired foods.

Comercial Mexicana, the parent company of Mega is the Mexican licensee or partner of Costco [once known as 'Price' here] that has no reluctance in selling thawed/refrozen Ben& Jerry's - whaddy gonna do?

If you think the thawed Ben & Jerrys was/is bad, the last time I was in MEGA, I noticed, in the frozen foods section, that nearly ALL packages of frozen pre-formed burgers had thawed to the point of being soft. When I informed a cashier, as I paid for my purchases, she seemed unconcerned, so I pressed to speak to an executive who, when finally arriving, didn't appear alarmed at all.

I couldn't get a hold of RAYMUNDO (the top exec there), who has always been a lot more together and responsive than other employees at MEGA, in my opinion, but the next time I see him, I'll make sure and raise the issue with him.

I hadn't been to MEGA for a very long time, and was amazed at how much more stuff they have there than at COMERCIAL, and how much cleaner and arranged everything was/is. I ONLY go to these BIG stores when they have something I can't get somewhere else, OR they're having a BIG sale of stuff I need, like during the month of JULIO REGALO, otherwise I make a point of shopping elsewhere, as the typical prices for just fresh fruit and veges are way more expensive at MEGA and COMERCIAL than at other local stores.

I find it interesting that the same large bagette 9.50 at comercial and 17.50 at the mega.

I hardly ever buy the breads at either MEGA or COMERCIAL, but sometimes just a few cheap bolillos, some cheese, sliced meat and a few beers, to have a quick lunch outside on the patio at COMERCIAL. In fact, I'm going there tomorrow to get a few things I couldn't get today at the embajadores. If you would like, I can send you a note ma?ana and see if you'd like to meet me there to talk to MEMO about any concerns we have. IF, MEMO will be there. He's the ONLY ONE to whom I would bother to address serious issues to.

Tired of however many brands of Salchida de Pavo from the Mega ?

Try some caseros at the butcher counter of the ISSTE Supermarket on the Libre to Silao on the left before the VW agency.

Four varieties: Pollo con Curri, Frutas Secas, Hierbas Finas and Ahumado con papas and cebolla. The sausages are meaty, dense and very lean.
