Bringing pets to Mexico, and good vets?
The last time I brought a dog here (several years ago) by car, I had no problems at all; no one asked for vaccination papers, etc. Is that still the case for dogs and cats coming by land? How about coming by air? Has anyone had an interesting experience, positive or negative, bringing in dogs or cats?

Is the only vet the one over by the french crepe restaurant - there used to be a vet on Alonso? Any recommendations for vets?

Thanks

Hi Mickey,

Do not send anyone to the vet near what was the Creperie. There are good vets at Can Cat in Calle Alhondiga (used to be in Alonso), and another vet in Potrero.

Only have experience with land border crossings - Going north we have had only one inquiry about the pets' shots. That is once in 11 years. Coming south we have never had to show papers for our pets.

Ditto what Heather says about the vets.

I have to disagree with Heather about the vet on Cantaranas in the plazuela near the cr?perie/deli. A couple of years ago a severely injured dog of the streets showed up at our doorstep needing attention as soon as it could be renedered. From the condition of the dog I thought it best that he not be moved. None of the 'favored' vets would come to attend to the dog. One of them even asked, "Is it a pet?" as if that mattered. The Vet in the plazuela came as quickly as he could - by bicycle. Sadly there was no hope for this dog and he had to be put to sleep. Our next walk-in, Scruffy, also near his end when he started camping out under our car was brought back to health and vigor by this vet. He's seems just not part of the 'in crowd' but that doesn't mean he is not a good and caring vet - and he's one who doesn't discriminate pet or non-pet when it comes to giving treatment when treatement is asked for.

We have a wonderful vet who comes to our home. He was recommended when our former street walker, Maya, started having seizures. Maya was afraid of everyone but came out from under the couch, walked up to him and he became her best friend. That's the only recommendation I needed. He comes to the house for Max, Maggie and now the perro cosmico, Ken. His name is Alfredo Escalera. His office is near the glorieta but on the road to SMA. His # is 733-4060 or 044 473 756 3651. A great guy, but he doesn't speak English.
