Renewing FM-3
In response to a question asked elswhere here is the general answer to how far in advance you can renew your FM-3:
Renewals can only be made within M?xico at your local INM office and must be made within 30 days before your FM3 expires. You already know where the office is -- you got your FM3 there. Go back and ask what their new procedures and requirements are. The process is being computerized and greatly simplified, but the details are not yet clear. I'll post more when the smoke clears. If you need to leave the country while your FM3 is at the office being renewed, there is a special form you can get from the office that allows you to travel for up to 60 days. If you are out of the country when your FM3 expires, you can arrange a special extension of the renewal date by as much as 60 days. http://rollybrook.com/living_in_mexico.htm Based on the timing of your trip and the changes INM are implementing I'd opt for a post-expiration renewal as suggested above but I believe you have to apply for the extension before you leave. The reason I'd do it post-expiration is that you should get the new card vs. the tatty old FM-3 booklet back. Martha Roberts another member of this site specializes in Immigration Renewals and it might be worth while contacting her. |
