WRC Mex 2020
The World Rally Championship car series hits town once again.
Tonight, Thursday, they will move thru Centro at 8pm offering close up views of quick cars and crew navigating our cobble stones and tunnels. Great colors, sounds and photo ops galore. Friday till Sunday numerous rallies will happen in the countryside surrounding here, Silao and Leon Visitors and groupies follow these cars all over the wide world of rally. Now it’s our turn to host. |

RE: WRC Mex 2020
By the way, Guanajuato is the only city and state in North America to host a WRC event, so it's yet another thing that sets Guanajuato apart. I believe that not long ago we had the only WRC event in the Americas, but I see Argentina now has one, too. For some reason, rallying has never caught on, at least at the international level, in the United States. Most WRC events are in Europe.

RE: WRC Mex 2020
That’s a reasonable observation on the rally series’ low profile in USA.
The sport does not stress power as does the more traditional and successful motor series NASCAR, Formula 1 which use rather tame circuits to allow for 200+ mph machines. Rally goes over mostly rough “as-is” courses with emphasis on skills beyond the accelerator. The American consumer always prefers excess over subtlety. |

RE: WRC Mex 2020
They need to move this thing to Aguascalientes. The roads there will shake the nuts off a Costco Cashew Jar. I have now driven down that way twice and those have to absolutely be the worst roads I have seen in Mexico. Now that's if the objective is to add an "as-is" challenge for these speed-sters. Guanajuato seems way too easy for this type of thing. I drive around here most times with only two fingers on the wheel.
Actually let me clarify here and say that Aguas is "consistently worst" in the road department but not "absolutely worst". Down bellow Oaxaca on the toll roads there are spots where the earthquake had left gaping holes in the pavement and lifted bridges about 6" above the level of the pavement and this happens on a road I paid nearly $25US to drive on. These guys should take these roads at 200MPH. At 50MPH, I almost bent my frame a couple of years ago. Anyway honorable mention goes to 57 just north of Mexico City and many roads in and around Puebla, but GTO ... man we got it easy let me tell ya. |

RE: WRC Mex 2020
Our event has always been only marginal in relative popularity to other WRC venues. My personal observation says 2020 saw a further drop in attendance and community interest. I believe both the State and Federal governments offer some degree of tourism support, either financial or in-kind. I enjoy their show as they zoom past our home but feel it may not return for 2021.
