Guanjuato needs a Yahoo sort of group
Or is there one I don't know about? This forum-sort-site here is too difficult to maneuver and get info from..too constrained. I suggest you all check out Civil_SMA Yahoo group for an example and see that there is constantly different subjects and info and references to things to do and such and even some belly-aching and scolding and fun stuff. ;)

Perry - Thanks for your comment. I've checked your links and blog. Great photos and some good stories - and wow arriving in Mexico in a Puegeot-403
With those great credentials I really don't understand your comment. Of course its my personal opinion but I think navigating around a proper web forum is easier than either Google or Yahoo groups. Organization is better and most everything is in the box where it belongs. When www.gtolist.com was founded a Googlegroup approach was ruled out in part because it is really nothing more than a glorified G-mail account. Watching the performance of a local Google group we found it ripe with Thread Highjacking and a lot of lazy behavior - multiple nested quoting when a simple reply was all that was needed. Why should one have to scroll 5-10" downward through quoted quotes just to find a single sentence reply? Perhaps the Google approach is just too confusing for even the most computer non-savvy users? Further - there was a Control aspect we wanted to avoid. www.gtolist.com was created to be a community asset - and not a 'property' of a draconian 'list owner'. Our site is open to all and freedom of expression is encouraged. Given this freedom our un-moderated membership has comported itself well - perhaps in time there will be someone who will overstep the bounds of common decency but we have not reached that point yet. As a group we'll deal with any such overstepping collectively. Our openness however has created one small problem - an automated enrollment-bot has found us and it's entries now comprise 12% of our membership [subtract those and we still remain the largest and most active community board in GTO] Once I get a moment to install an anti-bot the problem should go away. Another strength I think the www.gtolist architecture has over both Google and Yahoo is its message compartmentalization. Should you get a Daily Digest from a glorified G-mail group you get 'the works'. While you may only be interested in a topic or two the entire activity of the day is dumped into your inbox. In contrast on www.gtolist.com when you subscribe to Daily Alerts you receive one message when new activity occurs. Should additional activity occur in the same day you do not get another message - however when you log in you not only see the message you've been alerted to - all other New Message categories are in bold. One can then easily scroll through to select what is of interest and ignore the other categories. [Daily Alerts are re-set again after you log in] Frankly I think SMA could use a forum constructed as www.gtolist.com is. Look at this: Civil_SMA ? Civil San Miguel de Allende Activity within 7 days: 1 New Link - 725 New Messages - 34 New Photos - 2 New Files - New Questions That?s a lot of activity and it rolls out in this stream of consciousness fashion: 121995 Re: Landscape Designer Mike~ Tim did my landscaping for my newly constructed house a year ago and I couldn't be happier with the results. On the face of it there seems no easy way to separate the wheat from the chaff and with all that activity there is a lot of chaff and not too much flexibility. And Larry could do better here with a more illustrative request so we?d know which type of tubing he was interested in. ![]() www.gtolist.com welcomes your further comments and those of its members. Admin What would really be an asset to GTO is a new website on the par of Gangs of San Miguel. Now that's something to aspire to. |

RE: Guanjuato needs a Yahoo sort of group
personally, i find this type of message board FAR easier to navigate than any kind of google or yahoo group. I find the latter annoying..getting codensed e-mail versions and such and I can never figure out how to maneuver my way through those.
different strokes for different folks. if you don't like this board then you don't need to use it. i don't use boards that frustrate me, nor do i tell them to change it to suit my needs. |

MY PERSONAL OPINION. I am pretty happy here. No need to move. Thank you Bill for for making a "pleasant home" for the Guanajuato foreign community. It's been a pleasure to be here.

RE: Guanjuato needs a Yahoo sort of group
I think it would be great to have more discussion, but that's just a matter of posting something and seeing where it goes. Sometimes it gets crazy and sometimes it's interesting and informative.

RE: Guanjuato needs a Yahoo sort of group
Hi everyone, Newbie here!
Have greatly enjoyed reading the posts and viewing your photos the last few days since my joining! ...my dos centavos on the subject at hand: Among others, I belong to a Yahoo group for residents of Alamos, Sonora where I used to hang my hat back in the early 80's and in my opinion there really is no comparison. With this type of forum it is much easier to find previous posts and reply to them...I vote for keeping this one intact.. Thanks for your hard work in the creation & upkeep of this forum, Bill!
