opera in mercado hidalgo

Rochelle - the next time I see you, I'm going to kiss you. Gracias for the info about the wonderful "concert" in the Mercado Hidalgo today. I walked down and was surprised that there weren't too many people there. Just one person deep along the railing upstairs. So interesting that during very loud and beautiful opera arias, the "locals" sat and ate their usual food at the stands on the main floor. Then the singers would stand up in Mariscos Pancho or another place. The singers were great and all dressed as if they just came from their job in the mercado. They wore jeans, tee shirts, aprons. The guy singing Toreador took off his red apron since he was a toreador. It was wonderful. It made up for 2 events I walked out of last year. The euphoria wore off on the walk home tho. Does anyone know anything more about this group and where they are from?

Here's an update on road construction - from Embajadoras I always walk down Belauzaran, thru the tunnel and up Alonzo. It appears that the work might be about 2/3 finished. The sidewalks are really wide and have smooth stones so maybe I won't be the only one walking there into centro. There's still pigeon poop all over and they won't change that. The poured concrete is so much better than on Pastita. They are making much deeper designs in it so you really have to look to realize that it isn't stonework. Very nice.

I hope everyone else is having as nice a day. Now if the Packers can just beat Favre on the Vikings all will be right with the world.

thanks for your description of the concert at Mercado Hidalgo...is this a recurring event?

by the way...although having grown up on the minnesota/ wisconsin border i'm torn between the two, i resent the inference that the Packers could possibly beat the Vikings...:-))

...yeah minnesota side of the St Croix river! Stillwater?
