Aside from the tiendas of the cell phone services (telcel, iusacel, etc) do you know of an independent technician or store where i can get a cell phone unlocked?

There used to be a very small, one-man shop in a passageway near Del Sol. Would you know whether he is still in business?

I am planning a 2 month stay in Guanajuato. I have an unlocked iPhone 6s with a mini sim card. I plan to stay in touch with my family and friends via iMessage, Face Time, Whats app or Viber. I would only make phone calls to the US in case of emergency or within Mexico when absolutely necessary. What would be the cheapest options to be able to make calls to the US or within Mexico?

If you have WiFi, the talkatone app is nice. We downloaded it from the Apple store, and it comes with a free us number. For $5 a month we can make and receive unlimited calls and texts to us numbers from anywhere in the world. It only works while the phone is connected to WiFi though.

You can get a telcel mexican sim and use skype, or use over wifi, only problem is getting it microchip size that you have to do by hand or in Leon.
I just use skype to call phone numbers, super cheap and easy.
