I agree, JM's Butterfly B&B looks pretty interesting, and their prices are reasonable. They are in Zitácuaro, which is further south than the other places mentioned here. Google Maps says that it's four hours from GTO.

I just talked to a friend who stayed at this b and b last week. Actually, she camped on their property. She said the b and b is beautiful and the restaurant outstanding. She and her sister walked to the preserve but wish they had taken a horse!

I found my way to the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve today. It's north of Angangueo, which is an interesting town.
I'm staying at the Hotel Villa Monarcha, near Zitácuaro. The posted price was 1,250 pesos, which I wouldn't have paid. Instead, they offered me a room for 700 pesos. The place was near-empty Thursday night, but there's a few more people here tonight. Zitácuaro is not one of Mexico's garden spots. Angangueo has several hotels, and one of them looked pretty good from the outside.

RE: Michoacan/Monarch butterflies
Robert, Thanks for the post and information about the towns and hotels. My friends and I are going to Sierra Chincua a week from Wednesday, and I'm really looking forward to this trip..... finally! We decided to go there because it's not as touristy as Rosario, and easier to get to and has cheaper hotels than Cerro Pelon. In addition, I heard Chincua has a larger butterfly population than Pelon. Be sure to visit the nearby town of Tlalpujahua, where they make Christmas ornaments year round. It's also a "pueblo magico." Saludos, and enjoy your trip! Barbara
