Michoacan violence
Always good to be aware of what's happening. An article from Reuters today (Jan 13, 2014)

RE: Michoacan violence
Here's another article on the same subject: http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/...emplar-map

This article offers a chilling possibility:
"While the rise of the militias is understandable ... many see a similarity between the Mexican government’s winking at them and the sanctioned creation of right-wing paramilitary forces in Colombia two decades ago.

"The Colombian groups wreaked terror in the areas under their control and quickly became cocaine traffickers themselves.

"“I think we’ve seen this movie,” prominent journalist Carlos Puig wrote in his regular column in Milenio newspaper. “Thus it began in Colombia.”"

I've been following the narco wars closely for a long time, and what's going on in Michoacán these days is probably the most mystifying episode in the whole sordid history. Are the vigilante militias really "self-defense" groups? Or are they just fronting for another cartel? At this point, I don't think there's any way we can know.
