RE: Guanajuato Retirement
I was less than clear about food cost. I am/was referring to things I buy weekly such as Milk, Coffee, Imported cheese, can goods etc. Ice cream (the real stuff) runs at least 3 x's what I pay in the US. Even the BBQ Chickens run more (85 pesos at Mega, $4.50 US at Winco) unless you go to the smaller markets & but 2 ( 100 pesos) something is just too wasteful when alone
Fruits & veggies are far cheaper than the US. So that does bring my total costs down considerbly

In the end all you need is Proper contacts and administrator of fund needed for successful Retirement in Mexico. The rest is details, but for $1700 a month you and your wife will be living like a King and Queen in Mexico.

Actually your post just gave me an idea....

Look forward to helping you out in Cuevano.

RE: Guanajuato Retirement
Thanks Ponce. I suspect $1700 would provide a very small kingdom, but if it is doable we're there.

I think peddler is to be blunt wrong 2lbs of wonderful Guatemalan dark roast coffee for 99 pesos at costco that's half of what I pay in the USA I think the rib eyes and new yorks I buy at the Mega are at least a third cheaper than back home. When I do a big round of shopping and convert the pesos to dollars I am always pleased and surprised I guess it might depend on where you live in America.

RE: Guanajuato Retirement
My experience may well be different then some others but that certainly does not make me wrong. I stated in my first post that I have not been to Costco In Leon so can not compare cost to them. I have no desire to buy steak at Mega so that is not a factor. I listed many of the products I do buy so will not list again but would add Paper products which are much higher in Mexico for what ever reason.
My experience is my experience yours is yours. We both can be correct.

So that's where Costco comes in. Consider SHOP TOWELS about 43 pesos/roll in AutoZone but a 10 roll pack at Costco is 249 (I think) -so 25p/roll which is pretty close to 'quality'[junk] paper towels in Mega -these towels can actually go through a washer and dryer and still be used again - we don't really do that but we do tear them into smaller-than-sheet sizes which increases the savings.

RE: Guanajuato Retirement
Paper prices probably reflect scarcity here of suitable, ie pine, trees. There is however a large Kmberly Clark paper mill south of Morelia. Our eight years here tell me that almost anything that involves processing, cereals and anything in a box or can, will be costly while anything natural, fresh foods for example, will be less expensve than NoB. You can eat, at home, quite cheaply here if you stick to fresh meats, veggies and fruits.

RE: Guanajuato Retirement
Hi Everyone. Still considering Guanajuato but for the last 6 months have been looking at Romania. Quite a few reasons why, but the big attractions are fastest average Internet in Europe, costs comparable to lower cost cities in Mexico, English widely spoken, violent crime rate comparable to Canada. But not the best weather and a long way aways. I see that Megacable is offering Internet in Guanajuato now. How's the speed and reliability? Their website offers 100 meg speeds. Is that available, or at least the 50 meg, and is it affordable? The other big question is as the Peso has declined against the Dollar has the city become noticeably more affordable? Thanks for your help!

RE: Guanajuato Retirement
I think you will do fine on $1700 a month. Rent will be you biggest expense but I am sure you will find a place you can afford. We have the Telmex 600 peso package for phone and Internet and it works wonderfully. We have just had an Apple TV system hooked up and the Internet is fine for this system. Start out with a temporary rental and then roam the city and you will find something that suits you and your budget. We are currently building and once done we plan on a budget of $1000 a month.

RE: Guanajuato Retirement
I've been using Megacable's 10 mbit/sec service for two months now. It seems to be as reliable as Telmex, and it's definitely faster that Telmex's 5 mb/sec service.

Romania is an interesting idea. How do the costs compare to, say, Portugal or the Czech Republic?
