RE: Limited service, consulate San Miguel de Allende
At some point I am going to need to apply for a new (renew) my passport. I have never done this abroad. Do I apply at the SMA consulate AND pick it up there as well?

RE: Limited service, consulate San Miguel de Allende
you can do all of the below at the consulate in San Miguel de Allende. Be prepared for a fairly long wait in the office after you wait at the window and i believe you get a Number there after telling the clerk what you want to do. About a year ago I renewed my passport in SMA. It was easy enough. Took about 2 weeks and you pickup the new passport at a delivery office near Mega.
more details at:

http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/eacs_pas...ewals.html

You are eligible to renew your passport without an interview and without an appointment if your most recent U.S. passport:

Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application;
Was issued when you were age 16 or older;
Was issued within the last 15 years; and
Was issued in your current name.

Note: If any of the above does not apply, you must apply as a first time passport applicant.

If you qualify to renew your passport without an interview, you do not need an appointment. Simply drop off the following at the U.S. Embassy in Room 106 any business day from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Note: we do not accept passport renewals by mail).

VERY IMPORTANT: PLEASE BRING ORIGINAL AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE PASSPORT TO BE RENEWED.

Completed application form DS-82;
Your previous passport; and
One passport sized photo
Payment - You will need to make the renewal payment at the time you drop off your application.

We did this less than a year ago -maybe in Feb for our daughter who had torn out her picture page.Turnaround was less than a month. After making the application we had to go to DHL in SMA to do a prepaid document delivery to us in GTO. Passports I think are processed in US and then go to Embassy in MEX DF and then on to various Consulates who then use DHL to send to your home address. Actually a good system as you do not need to go back to SMA to pick-up the passport.
