My sad story with imigration
I went to San Miguel having had a fm3 for 5 and 1/2 years and a fm2 for 1 year and asked if I could get permanent residence. they said as long as there weren't any gaps that yes i could. I applied and was rejected because I really don't know why has something to do with when the law changed and when I switched to an fm2. During this process my fm2 expired so now I either have to own a property worth 2,000,000 pesos or show I have a pension or SS I have none of that. I do have monthly income. So they told me I have to go back to a Mexican consulate in the USA and show my bank statements. What a bunch of Crap!

Wouldn't it be easier just to go every 6 months to the border and get a 180 day tourist card? :)

RE: My sad story with imigration
You write, ".... they said as long as there weren't any gaps " Then later " During this process my fm2 expired " That's the gap. You start all over again.

Happened a year or so ago to my wife. After INM reviewed/accepted the presentation of her documentation they gave her the ficha for the bank payment. Later they 'discovered' their error [they didn't call it that ] and as a result of time passing her FM2 was then expired so she had to go through another procedure [Regualrization of Status I think] and that knocked her off the timeline for being eligible for ResPerm this year. It wasn't a bunch of crap. It is just the way it is. Had we not waited until the last minute to do the renewal it would have worked out all right even with the lost time refiling of the paperwork.

In your case was the 'change in the law' the reason your FM2 expired? Or just bad timing?

==something else: I... had a fm3 for 5 and 1/2 years and a fm2 for 1 year
Under the old system a FM3 is a 5 year deal - Issue year + 4 prorrogaci?nes -so in the other 1/2 year either you were starting on your 2nd FM3 or there was something dragging out the expiration of the 1st one before you changed to your 1st year of FM2 [which allows 4 refrendos] There is something missing in the telling of your story. Was it, since ResPerm can only be applied for on the expiration date of your FM3, that you appeared in SMA thinking all was OK but were then turned down and left unprepared to do the refrendo that caused your 1st year FM2 to go out-of-service?
