Driving to Gto.
In late Sept. we are coming to live in Gto. for several months. We are a family of five, two parents and three sons, ages 10,8, and 5. We were planning on driving down via Ca. to Az., towing a small camper. I am interested in hearing from people who travel this road regularly and their opinion of safety of this endeavor and the as well as recommended routes that would get us to Gto. in the shortest time on well traveled roads.
Additionally, does anyone know of families with younger children who are homeschooling in Gto. and are there any organized soccer leagues for kids? |

RE: Driving to Gto.
We have made 15 trips by car; none lately. Leaving via Naco, AZ, or Douglas, AZ, is very hard due to the mountains. Although, we never had problems, it is easy for harm to come from those who might hide in the mountain passages. It is VERY hard to pull a camper there and often road repairs hold you up for hours. Keep in mind that you can NEVER go back without the camper. Anything towed makes the vehicle and the towed item a single unit, well, at least a few weeks ago. All rules are subject to change without notice.
We found that entering via Columbus, NM, much easier, but they may NOT allow a trailer/camper brought in. Hire someone to get that pre-approved. We have had it go both ways at that check-point. Texas entries can be difficult, again with a trailer/camper. It's all about $$$. The inspectors (aduana) want $$. Our last trip was in February to McAllen, Texas. We had no problems with safety. Stay off "side-roads." Take the toll roads (not the libre), they are less likely to have roadblocks. Do not be afraid of soldiers/army - they are typically kind. Homeschooling is not a part of the culture. Many kids in our rural areas drop out of school by 5th grade; there are Montessori, Waldorf, and other private options. Very few things are "organized" in Mexico, but there are many places to play soccer. Children are brought up to be self-reliant. As a teacher, I can assure you that your 10, 8, & 5 year old off-spring will see another side of life that will be a priceless gift you are giving them. Good luck! |

RE: Driving to Gto.
Hi and welcome,
Dividing the year between our homes here and in San Carlos, Sonora ( circa Guaymas) we make the 950 mile trip 2-3 times yearly. It takes 16 hours, it is toll, "autopista" almost the entire route. Mostly 4 lane divided, with some 3 lane hybrid ala pass with care. As the tolls are costly by local standards there are fewer private cars, mostly commercial trucks and buses.green Angel road assistance vehicles, free services included in your toll, are highly visable as are Federal Police responsible for road patrol. Traffic congestion is only an issue as you deal with Guadalajara. We continue thru central on Mex 15, ignoring the bypass options. Never pulled a trailer but in general the road conditions almost equal US interstates but with poorer shoulders and banking. You can do this, and will be glad you did. The freeway between Tepic and GDLA cuts thru an ancient lava field with the relic volcano hanging above, really cool. A few basics: don't drive past dusk, never! Observe the speed limits. Be polite and smile as you encounter the security checkpoints, they are working for your safety. I can offer more particulars if you want. Bottom line it will be the trip of your family's lifetime with memories you will share and enjoy for years. Come on down! |
