anyone have this voice-over telephone technology problem?
About a year ago, we switched from Vonage to VOIPo (voipo.com) because it was cheaper. Right now it's not working-- for three days, I do get a dial tone, but no matter who I call, I get an automatic busy signal. Called the customer service people, and they agree it's not connecting with their server, but they can't figure out where the problem is, either. My questions:
1. Has anyone had this problem and solved it?
2. If not, do you have a foolproof, problem-free voice over telephone company you're happy with, that you'd recommend?

Assuming you are using a VOIP ATA adapter like the Linksys PAP2 . Callcentric is great. I have been using them for 4-5 years -almost trouble free ( 6 months ago they suffered an agressive and serious DDOS attack for a few weeks but they were very communicative and had daily fixes in place until the entire problem was resolved.

Free voice mail and a US number for free incoming calls as well WEBSITE HERE

PAP2 not necessasry You can also use "softphone" i.e. computer with headset and mic

Looking at your VOIPo website - they look very expensive. On Callcentric I use the free [prepaid] plan adding $5 via PayPal whenever I have to top up. Calls to most of the world are 2c or less - we call Thailand for hours each month. Its just under 2c. On VOIPo they want 7c

I'm using Ooma in the US and love it. Looks like it works in Mexico as well based on the link below...

About $130 at Costco in the states.

I had mixed success with various VOIP providers over the years. I finally switched to a Skype Mexico account, which gives you a U.S. dial-in number and unlimited dialing to the U.S. Besides the wide availability of portable devices for Skype works extremely well on the latest Android devices (e.g. Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD) and latest Apple IOS devices.

The big problem everyone is experiencing is with Telmex -no matter what service you've signed up for, upload speeds have ground down to a halt - averaging 40-60 kbps. Skype can barely hold a call at this speed, but most VOIP ATAs require a minimum of 80-90 kbps.

Go to speedtest.net and check your connection speed.

I rarely make international calls, regular or voice-over, so most of the comments below are Greek to me.

Out of curiosity, I ran the speedtest that was recommended and got the following results. Do any of you know how to interpret them?

3.6 Mbs Download
.31 MBs Upload
26 ms Ping

Thanks,
Barbara

What I see as a problem with Ooma, Vonage and similar is that you need to buy their 'device' which is simply a locked ATA [Analog Telephone Adapter]

Ooma
Item Description Ooma Telo? Price $179.99

Vonage seems to be giving the Vonage Box away for "free" but you end up paying for it over and over again
Vonage World? $9.99/mo.? for 3 months then $25.99/mo.? plus taxes and fees with 1-year agreement2

These companies are basically selling a standard ATA loaded with their own proprietary software. Change companies? then you need another box.

You buy a genereic Cisco/Linksys PAP2 for around $30 on Amazon or EBay
and then use any VOIP provider's cost per minute rate. The PAP2 is a 2 line unit so you can have two different VOIP services running at the same time

These 'name brand' services are more or less like the old AOL - you end up paying too much for something very simple.

Skype, Callcentric
First, I have a Skype dial-in number, but I'm letting it go at the end of this week because it just isn't reliable enough.

I've been using CallCentric since May. This was during the DDOS mentioned here, and it was also non-functional for several days at the end of October because their data centre got knocked out by Hurricane Sandy.

The main thing, though, is I couldn't get acceptable performance from CallCentric using a softphone, although it nearly works with CSipSimple on my Android phone. However, I hooked up a Linksys SPA1001 Analog Telephone Adapter, and CallCentric has been working beautifully ever since. You can buy these gadgets on Amazon for $40.

I still use Vonage but following a tip from Peggy Fisher (Johaningsmeir) got the company to cut my monthly fee to about $17. I don't remember the "script" PF gave me so for more info contact her.
