What are the basic advantages of having a CURP? When is having a CURP a necessity (didn't need one to join IMSS) Are there any disadvantages for someone with an FM3?

RE: ? CURP ?
I got my CURP when I changed my then FM3 from Rentista to Lucrativo. (and also got my RFC and the opportunity to pay taxes )
You can get some background info here and if you have a CURP you can go here here to print out a copy of your card. ( this site, e-mex.gob, also has many other good links on it ) More info in Spanish on the CURP here |

RE: ? CURP ?
This link is for Guadalajara but the summary below applies to us.
http://guadalajarareporter.com/features-...d-one.html Summary In October 1996, the federal government issued a decree obliging every person living in Mexico to be assigned a personal identification number to be known as CURP (Clave Unica de Registro de Poblacion or Universal Key for Registration of the Population.) The long-term aim of this program was to simplify bureaucratic procedures and allow dozens of different government institutions to identify citizens with a single ID number. By using the CURP, dealing with departments such as Hacienda, Inmigracion, Salud, Educacion, the Registro Civil, among others, will, in theory, become more efficient. The govern-ment's long-term aim is for the CURP to take the place of all other official ID numbers, such as a person's RFC (personal tax number), IMSS (Social Security) number and RFE (Student Registration Number). Obviously the program did not take effect overnight. Little by little over the past few years, government agencies have required citizens to obtain their CURPs so they can proceed with official tramites. In many agencies the CURP is now an obligatory requirement for all procedures. In addition to government agencies, financial institutions in Mexico, including banks, brokerage firms and investment fund operators such as Lloyd and MultiValores, are required to have on file the CURPs of all their clients who are resident in Mexico (i.e. with FM2 or FM3 status). While many financial institutions have already asked their customers to obtain the numbers, others have left it rather late. According to one source, banks and financial institutions must be provided with the CURP no later than January 31, 2003. Foreigners whose business or home address is not located in Mexico. Non-residents with accounts here (those wih tourist FMT cards) must supply their financial institution with an up-to-date legal address outside Mexico before the January 31 deadline. The CURP consists of 18 letters and numbers that refer to the person's name, date of birth, gender, birth certificate or immigration document number and place of birth. For foreigners without a passport, a certified translation of one's birth certificate will be accepted. Here is the information to get it locally: http://mejoraregulatoria.guanajuato.gob....ora/?q=tys If you need assistance, contact me. Martha Roberts Mexican Living |

RE: ? CURP ?
I got my CURP when I switched from FM3 to FM2. I didn't ask for it; rather, it was given to me as standard procedure when I made the switch.
I don't think there are any advantages or disadvantages to having one, at least for a foreigner. Before I had a CURP, I was occasionally asked for one, and it was never a problem that I didn't have one. It's the government that gains, as Martha indicates, by assigning everyone a number. And, of course, what's good for the government is good for us all. ;) Don |

RE: ? CURP ?
Thank all of you for good responses. I just picked up my CURP at the
DIRECCION GENERAL DE REGISTRO CIVIL DE GUANAJUATO, at 29 Cantador. Given I brought my FM3, the process took less than 2 minutes. Much harder to find a place to park around there. As a Rentista, I haven't been required to provide a CURP. However, to serve on a Board of a Mexican non-profit (A.C.) or to sign certain legal contracts, a CURP may be required. Given the FBI and U.S. law enforcement agencies have been unable to merge databases and correlate identities of people posing a real threat to the safety and well-being in the U.S., I don't think there is much to worry about CURP and Big Brother over here. |
