A year and a half ago I was sitting at a concert and a friend David leaned over and said "I think you'd really like Guanajuato.".

"Gwanawhat?" I asked. I scribbled the name of the city in the back of one of my many journals, alongside recommended book titles and TED talks.

A few months later I had followed David's advice and was sitting on a rooftop terrace in Guanajuato, cultivating an absurd fantasy about painting and living here with my family...a ridiculous notion, as if being a writer/artist couple hadn't provided me with enough hurdles....

But January of this year I was nestled with my family in a taxi, returning from San Miguel de Allende to our temporary home in Guanajuato. We had a giant roll of canvas across our legs and sticking out the back window. The wind whipped our hair against our faces as I sat crunched in the back seat with my lanky teenagers. Six months stretched before me; I had a home surrounded by mountains, a studio replete with big jars of paint, and finally a substantial roll of blank canvas. And perhaps most notably, no seatbelts.
