New arrival with a few logistical questions
I am a newcomer to the board and a newcomer to GTO. My husband and I are Peace Corps volunteers with Peace Corps Mexico. We are the first volunteers living in Guanajuato city and we are working in quite a unique program focused on technology transfer. We are working at the CONACyT center up the hill in Valenciana and currently living with a host family in Los Filtros while we find a place to live. It looks like we have found a place to rent in Valenciana and I have a few questions for all of you in the know about GTO.
From searching on the web, it look like Infinitum is the only game in town for internet-is that true or I missing something? Also, for cable TV it looks like the choice is Sky and Dish. Is that true or are there others we should know about? And is there a way to bundle internet with TV? Finally, my last question is about water delivery. Our program doesn't allow us to drive a car so we need to depend on buses and taxis. Can we get Ciel water delivered up the hill either from the water company or through Soriana or Mega? If so, any contact info would be appreciated. There is a little store next to the case de los lamentos that gets water delivered and that is very close to where we be living so I am hopeful maybe we can arrange something. If not, I guess we can buy it there and walk it up the hill a bit or take a jug up at a time via the bus-but I was hoping for something a little easier  Last but not least, it is a such a pleasure to find this board. We are enjoying getting to know GTO and would love to connect with some of you at some of the events mentioned. We are excited and happy to be the first Guanajuato Peace Corps volunteers and hopefully over our two years here we get the change to explore more of the city and the region! |

RE: New arrival with a few logistical questions
About the water... Since you will be here for 2 years, it would probably be worthwhile to buy an ozone generator to purify your drinking water and produce. We bought ours 12 years ago and have had good results. We purify 3 liters and then pass it through a brita filter. No heavy lifting, no having to wait for the delivery, no need for correct change, etc. No, I cannot suggest a place to buy the generator; the store where we made the purchase is gone. However, there are others on the list that might be more current. |

RE: New arrival with a few logistical questions
I hate dealing with the garifons, and dislike the space they take up in the kitchen. My solution was to bring a PUR filter from the U.S. (widely available there) and install it on the kitchen faucet. I fill a pitcher (about 2 liters) at a time, and that suffices for my needs.
In M?xico, I have seen a variety of simple filter systems at Home Depot (you'll have to go to Le?n for that, but the green bus will drop you off across the street -- get out at Sam's club and cross the street). You might also check at Mega in Guanajuato. |
