Questions INM site doesn't answer about extending residence permit
I went to the INM site but all it told me was that to EXTEND I should "bring documentation" without telling what. . . The INM person I talked to on the phone talked more quickly than I could absorb. Which of the following are currently necessary?

US passport and two copies of the front page.

In my case, the new, still current permit.

A letter stating what it is you are trying to accomplish.

Proof of sufficient income to support yourself. This would be a bank statement with your name on it for the past three months. . .

Proof of living in Mexico i.e. a phone bill or a CFE (electric) bill with your name on it or a letter from your landlord saying that you rent the property at a given address...

Money to pay the fee about 3,100 pesos (2012).

Will appreciate the info as I hope to avoid unnecessary work as well as a repeat trip.

Although it is a yearly pain - a visit vs a call to INM will answer your questions as everyone's case may be slightly different. The process is getting easier and easier.
Go to INM in Leon [I prefer it over SMA] or SMA sign in, get a number and the agent will look up your details and then give you a sheet with the requisitos checked off

From your list these are the Definites:

---US passport and two copies of the front page.

---In my case, the new, still current permit.

---A letter stating what it is you are trying to accomplish. LEON gives you a Fill-in-the-Blanks standardized letter

---Proof of sufficient income to support yourself. This would be a bank statement with your name on it for the past three months. . . [in our case NO - in the letter you just say your "condition" is the same as before]

---Proof of living in Mexico i.e. a phone bill or a CFE (electric) bill with your name on it or a letter from your landlord saying that you rent the property at a given address... maybe

---Money to pay the fee about 3,100 pesos (2012). 3130 INM give you a ficha to take to a bank - then make 2 copies of your payment receipt and return

y mas
FOTOS! and maybe more stuff - they have our Formato Basico which lists all the items annexed - I may not have recalled everything.

Formato Basico - they will give to you

OH, you MUST go on line and initiate the process http://www.inm.gob.mx/index.php/page/Sol...e_Estancia Do this before you visit the INM office ---and you are going to have to visit the office in any event to get the Formato Basico and the ficha for the bank payment.

Thanks, Bill.

It may be that the Formato Basico is on line to be printed out. Another website suggested taking the blank one to fill out at INM.

I went to SMA to renew my "no inmigrante" (the thing that used to be called an FM3) on Wednesday. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it's possible to renew it for three years, at a cost of 5,900 pesos. I jumped at this.

After this three years is up, it's possible to apply for permanent residence.

Depends on what your "INM" is of course but the answer will probably be No as it has already expired. Other than have you leave the country they may impose a multa - or they may fine you and then deport you. I suggest you contact them ASAP there are e-mail links on their site here or try to call them in SMA or Leon.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I read on a recent thread here somewhere that a person had to wait till had expired to renew it.

Does anyone have a number for Leon that actually gets through to someone? I've tried tons for over 30 mins, to no avail.

Many thanks for your help.
All the best,
Rick

What that is referring to is the transition from FM2 or Residente Temporal to Residente Permanante
