changing from yahoo to gmail- worth the hassle?
Would like to know the pros and cons before I do anything rash so am submitting this not strictly-GTO question. I'm tired of Yahoo's so-called news.

RE: changing from yahoo to gmail- worth the hassle?
I switched to Gmail from Yahoo several years ago, and have no regrets. It's easy to navigate, does a good job of filtering spam, and is easy to organize. All in all, I've been very pleased.

You get what you pay for with either service. Google sells away your privacy, while Yahoo irritates you with their sponsors disguised as news. But, the public prefers this business model over paying $15/month for fully confidential, ad-free mail.

Rochelle, I'm puzzled by what you mean when you complain about "Yahoo's so-called news." I use both Yahoo Mail and Gmail, and I don't see any news in either one. (Yahoo News is a separate entity from Yahoo Mail.) I also don't see any ads in either one; if ads bother you, use the Firefox extension Adblock Plus.
fr8as is right about spam. I get about 200 spam emails a week in my Yahoo account, versus 10 or 20 in Gmail. There are a couple of things Yahoo Mail does better than Gmail, but overall, in my opinion, Gmail wins hands-down. If I were using only one service, I'd go with Gmail. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if Yahoo goes Tango Uniform one of these days; best to switch before that happens. Don |
