RE: Mexico malnutrition comparable to Africa: how to help?
Thanks, Doyle, for prodding us to look below the surface.
An aside. I met a UG anthropologist who takes her students to three communities near Leon to document the nutritional status of the residents. The community that receives the most remittances (moola), have the worst nutritional status, the one receiving the least cash fares best. This parallels studies made in the US where, say, Americans of Irish descent ate less nutritiously and had more health problems than people in the Irish counties they came from. I hope programs that help will work, they're a start, but it is hard to get people to eat "well," instead of spending more on Cokes, fritos, Maruchan, etc. |
