Hi and welcome,
Dividing the year between our homes here and in San Carlos, Sonora ( circa Guaymas) we make the 950 mile trip 2-3 times yearly. It takes 16 hours, it is toll, "autopista" almost the entire route. Mostly 4 lane divided, with some 3 lane hybrid ala pass with care. As the tolls are costly by local standards there are fewer private cars, mostly commercial trucks and buses.green Angel road assistance vehicles, free services included in your toll, are highly visable as are Federal Police responsible for road patrol. Traffic congestion is only an issue as you deal with Guadalajara. We continue thru central on Mex 15, ignoring the bypass options. Never pulled a trailer but in general the road conditions almost equal US interstates but with poorer shoulders and banking. You can do this, and will be glad you did. The freeway between Tepic and GDLA cuts thru an ancient lava field with the relic volcano hanging above, really cool. A few basics: don't drive past dusk, never! Observe the speed limits. Be polite and smile as you encounter the security checkpoints, they are working for your safety. I can offer more particulars if you want. Bottom line it will be the trip of your family's lifetime with memories you will share and enjoy for years. Come on down!
