I got my CURP when I switched from FM3 to FM2. I didn't ask for it; rather, it was given to me as standard procedure when I made the switch.
I don't think there are any advantages or disadvantages to having one, at least for a foreigner. Before I had a CURP, I was occasionally asked for one, and it was never a problem that I didn't have one. It's the government that gains, as Martha indicates, by assigning everyone a number. And, of course, what's good for the government is good for us all. ;) Don |
