low fat cheese with good flavor in Gto?
I bought some that had no taste at all, don't want to repeat the experience. I do know about goat cheese but am looking for cow's milk cheese. I'd like to know where it's available in Gto or Leon & if possible the brand or name.

RE: low fat cheese with good flavor in Gto?
With cheese, "low fat" and "good flavor" do not go together, regardless of country.
If you can forget the "low fat" part and just shop for cheese, I think you will find satisfactory available choices at Mega, or Comercial Mexicana. The rule of thumb is, the higher the price, the better the flavor, simple. Make sure and bring lots of money also, if you really want good cheese from either store. One cheese that I like a lot that is available at Mega and Comercial Mexicana, and fairly reasonable in price is: Montbeliard Queso Tipo Emmental, made in Germany (Alemania). It is a type of "swiss style" cheese, of high quality, and from the taste, I would rate it at medium in fat content, without sending it to the lab for testing. I slice it myself by hand and use it in sandwiches, and plain for snacking. As long as we are on the subject of cheese, I would like to make a note on the Parmesan Cheese choices available in Guanajuato. The block parmesan cheese sold here is NOT parmesan cheese, in my opinion. I used it for a few years, before I finally decided, "this is enough", and refused to buy anymore. You are better off to buy Mid America Farms Queso Parmesan Rallado, near the cream in Mega, and in the cheese section in Comercial. It beats the Kraft brand Parmesan, just read the ingredients, and then read the Kraft ingredients. Unfortunately, this is the sorry state of Parmesan Cheese in our humble city. |

I too have given up on the 'parmesan' in the Mega. Its from Uruguay - that's not the problem. Uruguay is a fine little country - it?s that the consistency of production quality varies so much. At times it can be passable, dry, granular and tasty but for some while now it?s just been tasteless rubber and not worth the price.
Real Parmigiano-Reggiano
![]() can be obtained at the H-E-B in Leon which also has good pastrami [beef or turkey]. The corned beef isn't so hot. Three other items at H-E-B of interest are its Mixed Italian Cheese Blend which is sharp and tasty, real tomato paste in little 6 oz cans [imported from Italy] and their "Invent-a-Size" paper towels - good quality and they tear off in half sheets. All of the above are not always in stock so stock up when they are. If any of the members know the person opening [or has opened] the deli here in GTO he/she seems unaware of our site and its ability to reach the GTO ex-pat market. Although it may not look like the deli below its sure to be a fine addition to town. ![]() |

Hello Duck,
Could you post the location of this "new deli" in Guanajuato? As far as HEB goes, this is the second time I have heard it recommended. I highly dislike Leon, and as a result have not visited the city proper since 2006, but I think I may break down, and check out the HEB. I am starting to go crazy with only the same select items being available, no matter what store you go to. I would really like to find some REAL lasagna noodles, the kind that are thick with curly edges, that have to be boiled, and cost 89? in the US. Here, all I can find are "instant" lasagna noodles for about US$4 a pack, or more. Glad to hear of the availability of tomato paste. I had been bringing it from the border in annual routine car trips up there, but those trips have come to an end do to the narco/military situation. |

RE: low fat cheese with good flavor in Gto?
J, Leon is an acquired taste. Seemingly ugly it really has a lot to offer. As you know when the Mega opened 4 years ago it was a fantastic improvement over the Comercial. There are some of us who have been here before there was even a Comercial - it?s on the site of the old bus station. Cafe de Olla was all there was and that's a taste I refuse to acquire.
The GTO deli is, from what I understand, in the little plazuela on Cantaranas [ the street w/ T. Principal ] It sounds like you are anxious to go so give us a report and encourage the owner to join here and promote his wares. Tomato paste - for the lack of such, yes we have lived deprived lives. ThaiWok is about to or has opened in Leon on J. Alonso Torres Landa on the right side past WalMart3 - I'll have more details next Wednesday. Hope its more than just a name like DimSumKing in Veracruz - no DimSum |
