UpComing GTO Events & Travel to USA transport offer
GTO Friends,
Our book, Empowering Spanish Speakers, was met with open arms in at the New Orleans convention among Americans Librarians wanting me to speak at their up-coming events. This means lots of time traveling to the USA by bus. Don and I returned home Saturday from McAllen, Texas. I leave again the 12th of July for Dallas and then Chicago. There are already events in Sept., Oct., January planned for me. Please keep that in mind if you need something brought back, I'm "making the border run" often. email me jzm (at) email (dot) arizona (dot) edu Thursday 4pm I am speaking at the library in SMA followed by a book signing. Sunday, the 10th at the UU Church in SMA. Book sales fund literacy programs in GTO - please forward this information to friends. The book is available on Amazon. Recent testimonials: Jacqueline Z Mackenzie takes us into a live project that includes real kids in a rural setting and allows us to explore educational realities. We are brought face to face with the challenges that students face when placed in an environment where languages other than their own are used, not because the learner chose this situation. Unlike other places in the world where multilingualism is honored and respected the US tends to consider this a tolerable problem and inconvenience. This book helps those who are and will be involved in the teaching process to recognize the connection between culture and language and its importance in the learning process. Maybe this book will help us turn this teaching process into a pleasurable exploration child's family and background... ~ Mike Rohrbach - SE Arizona based Information Literacy group implementing Digital Libraries in rural Mexico ?We (in Canada) have received a copy of the book on Empowering Spanish Speakers (from the publisher). We, as volunteers in Mexico working with children, this book has been a great help to us in understanding the culture and focusing on life in Mexico. I am director of the mission working with families that live in a landfill or garbage dump. We strongly recommend this book to all people that live or travel to Mexico for better understanding of lives in Mexico. P.S. A must read.? ~ Winnie Giesbrecht, ?FAD - Families at the Dump Project P.V. (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico)? www.familiesatthedump.org Understanding is the key to teaching, the key to empowering people with the ability to learn, the ability to better oneself. Understanding requires knowledge of cultural differences, language barriers, social and economic differences, and much more. It is not a simple task to go into a classroom and expect each student to be equally prepared to learn the same curriculum. Similarly, it cannot be expected for a person from a different linguistic, social and/or economic background to learn a specific job or trade or how to do business?? It is an authoritative study, which includes thoroughly documented statistics coupled with heart-warming and sensitive real- life stories about the people who influenced and became her research subjects. This work would be a powerful tool for educators, education researchers as well as the general public who show a compassion to care for other social, economic and linguistic groups. ~ Empowering Spanish Speakers, is definitely recommended by award- winning author and Allbooks reviewer, Emily-Jane Hills Orford, Allbooks Reviews, www.allbooksreviewint.com. |
