Driving in from Reynosa and would like info on recent experiences

Hello:
We lived in Guanajuato about a year and a half ago, and established a bookmobile, Bibliobus, while there. We will be driving down to Guanajuato from Illinois in about a month and we were wondering what experiences, positive and negative, people have had driving in from McCallen/Reynosa. We keep hearing about how much worse the border is getting, so I thought I'd ask. I no longer subscribe to gtolist because I am no longer living there, but was wondering if my question could be posted anyway. Please let me know. Blessings, Ada

We went thru Reynosa 2nd week in April. On the way up we used the Pharr bridge which is a bit out of the way. On the way down we left McAllen at 6AM and used the main bridge. All quiet. There is a big presence of police and federales on the toll road in Tamauipas. I have a friend who claims I am crazy to drive and that there is more violence on the toll road than the libre. Well, I disagree. Another friend, a Mexican put logos on his very nice and large, new van so that it wouldn't be interesting to anyone to steal. Luckily we didn't see anything amiss. The US news is really horrible. While there, there was a CNN program called "Murder In Mexico". I didn't watch. Too bad they make it seem so dangerous down here. Tourism is way down. See you soon.
