RE: Ley seca
In addition, and perhaps a more imminent threat, two huge Mexican breweries have either suspended operations or have plans to do so soon, in the wake of government decisions to shut down "non-essential" businesses. The details on just when this will happen are a little unclear at this point. The breweries are Grupo Modelo (maker of Corona, Modelo, Victoria, León, Montejo, and Pacífico, among others) and Heineken México (Heineken, Indio, Dos Equis, Sol, Carta Blanca, and Bohemia, as well as the strangely popular urine-flavored beverage Tecate).
This news has reportedly led to panic buying in some parts of the country, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that here as well. Nobody asked me, but shutting down breweries seems cruel. People are supposed to remain both at home and completely sober for an indefinite period? Also, I suspect that anyone determined to drink alcohol will, if deprived of beer, switch to something else instead. I know of no current plans to shut down distillers of tequila, whiskey, rum, etc. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-heine...SKBN21L29Q |
