JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
From a friend in Paris--dp
For those who don't already know this, here is some very helpful information about the virus from Johns Hopkins Hospital. The following is from ______, whose daughter is an Asst. Prof in infectious diseases at Johns Hopkins University, quite informative. * The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes their genetic code. (mutation) and convert them into aggressor and multiplier cells. * Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies. * The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam). By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own. * HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use water above 77 degrees Fahrenheit for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful. * Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus. * Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside. * Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin. * NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC SERVES. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; antibiotics cannot kill what is not alive. * NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only -between 3 hours (fabric and porous), -4 hours (copper and wood) -24 hours (cardboard), - 42 hours (metal) and -72 hours (plastic). But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose. * The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars. They also need moisture to stay stable, and especially darkness. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster. * UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask is perfect. Be careful, it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin. * The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin. * Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat. * NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serve. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%. Edit: there are a few alcohols more than 65%, and Vodka does come in 50%, but still not strong enough to kill the virus. * The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less. * You have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom. * You have to Moisturize dry hands from so much washing them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better. * Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there. -JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL |

RE: JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
Much of the information above is good. Some of it is bad, i.e., false or unproven. It is NOT from Johns Hopkins.
Please, everyone, before sharing "very helpful information" about the coronavirus and COVID-19, do a little research. It takes less than a minute to discover that the above info is not from the cited source. For more, see https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/johns-...d-summary/ |

Don:
You have to be more straightforward with us. If you do not agree with a few of the points in the very thorough message please share your wisdom and tell us which points are incorrect. This blanket statement of yours is detrimental to our confidence in figuring out what to do in this crisis. We appreciate your help but please make it useful. James |

RE: JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
James:
I regret that I can't do as you ask. However, I believe it is "useful" for you to know that the post did NOT come from Johns Hopkins, a highly respected medical authority. Instead, it came from God knows whom, then went "viral" (in the other sense of the word), and has been circulating for several days in various versions. The person or persons who originated the post did not put their own names on it, because they are not medical authorities; to disguise that fact, they abused the name of Johns Hopkins. They are, therefore, liars. That also is "useful" for you to know. Another thing you might find useful would be to read the Snopes article to which I linked. It goes through some of the points in the phony Johns Hopkins piece. You want me to go point by point through the post and tell you what's true and what's false? While I appreciate your apparent confidence in me, I have neither the time nor the medical expertise to do so. Sorry, but in this modern age of bogus information being shared widely on social media and in forums like Gtolist, I think each of us has to be pretty much on our own. To separate the wheat from the chaff, we each need to do our own research, or, if we can't find the time to do so, to find a reliable source of information. This is one case in which, I think, the much-maligned "mainstream media" have mostly been doing an excellent job. The New York Times, for example, has more COVID-19 articles each day than I can manage to read. On a matter as complicated as COVID-19, I submit that social media and forums such as this one are not sufficiently reliable. Be wary in particular of those who repeatedly post unreliable information. -- P.S. to Doyle: Brilliant rebuttal. As the saying goes, quidquid latine dictum sit altum videtur. |

RE: JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
I will read Snopes. Thank you. I agree with your comments. I am trying not to listen to much anymore.
On a parallel topic, I need to find out about travel restrictions and if they apply to my novia who is living with me here in GTO, and has been since December. She is from Brazil. She wants to go to the USA with me probably in May. Allowing that things may change about travel restrictions between now and May, I am trying to find reliable information about whether she can go into the USA now. She has a Portuguese passport which will allow her to stay in the USA for three months, if they will allow her int at all. She has not been to Portugal for over a year. She has a Brazilian Passport which she used to travel to Mexico this past December. She can stay in the USA for three months on the Brazilian Passport, if they will allow her in at all. She has been in Mexico since before the virus hit. Can she go into the USA or not? Where do I find answers to these questions? Any suggestions for reliable sources would be appreciated. James |

RE: JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
You might want to visit the US Consulate in San Miguel. They process many visas for many people and should be able to offer definitive information.
You can schedule an appointment on line. |

RE: JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
James:
I second what jesm wrote: visit or call the consular agency in San Miguel. Or, perhaps, call the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. I have a very similar concern to yours, as my wife is Mexican. She has a U.S. visa, but it's not at all clear in what I've read on the embassy and State Department websites whether she'd be allowed to drive across the border with me. She could fly, at least for now, and I imagine your novia could as well, but it would be nice to have a definitive answer, no? The other day the U.S. ambassador to Mexico held a live, hour-long Q&A session on Facebook (the video is available on the embassy's Facebook page, and I think also on YouTube), and he and his team answered all kinds of questions, except your and my kind. In your efforts to get in touch with the consular agency and/or the embassy, be aware that they're short on staff because of the pandemic, and they're limiting some of the services they offer. Now that I think of it, your best bet might be email. The embassy's email address is ACSMexicoCity@state.gov, and the San Miguel consular agency's is conagencysanmiguel@state.gov (at least it used to be; you might want to Google it). Good luck. |

RE: JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL on the Corona Virus
Jesm and Don:
This info for the SMA consulate agency was fantastic. They got back to me right away. There are now no restrictions on flying into the US. Terrestrial transit is much more difficult. As for the Visa questions they said that the SMA office is a limited "Consulate agency" not the outright consulate. We will have to go to the actual consulate to discuss the visa issues. Thank you, Thank you, thank you. Nothing like reliable real information (which is getting harder and harder to find or to trust). James |
