Car rental in GTO
Hi Folks-- My wife and I will be in GTO for about six weeks this winter and will not have a car. We can get along for most things by walking and taxi but have found having a car to be useful for trips to the grocery store and out of town. We have looked into renting a car in the past but have found that the car rental companies at the airport charge exorbitant fees for insurance that make renting prohibitively expensive. Does anyone know of any other options for car rentals in GTO that are more reasonable?
Thanks in advance. Tom O'Connor |

RE: Car rental in GTO
No matter what, you absolutely do not want to rent a car that doesn't have liability (or more specifically, bail bond) coverage. If you're in any sort of accident without such coverage, you will be detained until the police complete the investigation, which will take several days.

RE: Car rental in GTO
No magic bullet that we have found after many rentals in many areas of Mexico.
Avis always wants that huge daily adder for full insurance coverages. They will as an alternative put a hefty ($4-5000 USD) hold against your credit card to cover any damages when you return the vehicle. This approach saves you substantially in total rental costs but shifts the risk to you should you damage the car. We have experienced no damages, so far so good, and the hold on our credit card is promptly cancelled as we return the car in good condition. One other difference, you and the rental agent will together inspect, in some detail, the condition of the vehicle before you receive it. Every outside scratch, dent etc. is noted as to location and you sign acknowledging the starting condition. Ditto upon return as they compare the drive out condition as noted to the return condition. |
