RE: used items for the home
Following - but, maybe check facebook Chopper page, or Guana What?
Guana What - I think Mondays are when people can post their businesses/services https://www.facebook.com/groups/1587748181247376/ Chopper https://www.facebook.com/groups/673518249432621/ Get your hands on the print edition of the Chopper, too - can't remember what day it comes out - I think either Tuesday or Thursday? RE: used items for the home
Well I learned from a very reliable (and lovely) source the way you do it is watch the San Miguel Yahoo group and read of any of the announced garage or moving away sales and you try to find who all is running it and from there I can't really share all the best techniques but let's just say the success of the your experience will all be from previous social bonds and life-long networking skills. I continue to observe my good source and we both are always learning from others.
At most of these things all the quality items have been sold or exchanged before the doors even open. The higher the value of the seller's home, the higher the stakes will be. If you haven't already found an inside method to look over the stuff prior to the morning of the sale door opening, as soon as 10 minutes after the sale starts all the good stuff will be gone and things like quality knives, pots and pans, kitchenware, tools, power equipment and anything else of real value will be long gone. I have often encountered being elbowed out of the way even when first in line because most of the times the very aggressives have historically been looking for a long time before this sale and if you are polite when you enter the seller's home and simply walk into the home rather than being aggressive, there will be some who will elbow you out of the way. Most take a literal leap for the kitchen or the garage. They are so skilled that in a matter of walking 3 steps they have already scoped out everything of value and tucked it into their shopping bag and by the time you have only realized what room you are in. The only time you can win here is when the "bag stuffer" is unloading item by item at the checkout counter and trying to negotiate down each thing in the bag to a lower price. If they refuse to pay a price for something you want and then temporarily set the item over to the side while going on to the next one, at this point you can grab what they rejected while laying down the cash of the full marked price. Now this is where the difference between Gringo and Mexican cultures does not differ at all and at near the speed of light all moving bodies look the same and all elbows feel the same in your side. Finding any "good used stuff" in Mexico is an art form most of us will never approach and if you must do it merely for the sake of entertainment then you need to find someone who works in the hobby and has attained a near doctorate in the skill, otherwise you are going to come home with a lot of wasted bus tickets, taxi rides and hotel room costs that you could have just funneled into buying what you want at Costo instead. |

RE: used items for the home
Been thinking about this more .... There's much more than garage sales actually, but "depende" pretty much sums it up as my universal go-to word. And while you can think of Gringo garage or moving sales as maybe having a lot of nice stuff, well maybe so or maybe no. I didn't delve too much into what you are looking for, so maybe that would help. Otherwise this is a hard question to answer because one person might accept a power company cable spool as a coffee table and the next person would think used furniture would mean an antique French mahogany with a couple of scratches. Also you have the crowd that buys junk furniture, paints on a new face in any number of styles and then something old is new again.
If you are looking for scuffed up and bruised old stuff, there's shops all over GTO, San Miguel and other nearby cities where you can go and look at the piece and maybe think of something you might be able to do with it. And I say that in my typical tongue in cheek style because some of this stuff needs a funeral ceremony rather than a buyer. (The words "fire wood" come to mind way too often.) I always think what the blip is this stuff and then in walks some whiz kid who knows the kind of wood , how sturdy the design, strength of the legs, they whip out some glue and a brush and when they are done with it I no longer recognize it. And while I've been to a sizable amount of these junk furniture outlets, I was tagging along and now I couldn't find one of these places if my life depended on it. Also I don't know what your budget is but all over Guadalajara they have specialty furniture makers. And I think the bus takes a little over 4 hours to get there (of course if furniture shopping you're going to likely need a truck or trailer or you'll be in the same condition the other poster who recently said they are moving to Patzcuaro and be also looking for a hand. Guadalajara is a little like NYC in that different neighborhoods specialize in specific trades. I can recall across from Tacos Fish Lapaz there's a shop that makes those woven chairs that are covered in leather and they are not too pricey. These are a staple of Mexico and seem to go just about anywhere from dining to patio. And no one should think about furnishing a home before hitting Guad's suburb Tonala. Lots to see there even if you don't buy a thing. Now if you walk around the outskirts of Guadalajara you can find a private room hotel for $20-$30 but you do have to do a little looking and it's not always on booking (dot) con but check on the outskirts of town. It'll normally take a little research to come up with an economical room and if you have a bad neck, best bring your own pillow (think they stuff theirs with ducks rather than feathers.) Otherwise I am not sure why more people aren't helping you because they sell junk furniture everywhere if that would work for you. Maybe if you were more specific, some of the shop-o-hollics I know are lurking here will step in and lend a suggestion. Shopping in San Miguel is pretty much out unless you head deep into the unknown there because anything of value has likely been snatched up. Anyway enough of this, as it's not getting you anywhere but maybe it will conjure up someone who wants to at least point out one of my errors, which is actually a really good skill I have in my toolbox, and that's provoking people into verbalizing various nuances on a theme. |

RE: used items for the home
Fantastic! I will say this that if you are looking for a sharp knife in Mexico, best hold out until you can get one from Germany somehow. On one of the initial shopping trips to Guadalajara, stopped by an official restaurant supply with everything under the sun and paid a lot for a quality knife that wasn't. So save back money and buy from a quality distributor. My favorite at the moment is Wusthof, best knives I have ever owned, not cheap but last a lifetime.
Wishing you continued luck in your search. |
