Mining layoffs
The local precious metal industry is significantly reducing mining activities and employment to open 2019.
Great Panther Silver the largest local operator announced cut backs at several locations including El Cubo, Valenciana, Cata and Ranas. Total jobs impacted are over 500. El Cubo activities will be reduced to a single shift, from current three. The reductions reflect declining prices and fortunes in the worldwide mining sector.
These layoffs will cause pain across the local communities. The damage is especially dear as underground positions are among the best paying jobs available here to low skilled workers.
