RE: Article about increase in murder rates in state of GTO
After having lived as an expat in Mexico since 1992, I discovered that expats are not usually the victims of these killings. Unless....you´re dealing with the cartel or drugs. My family in the U.S. always contacts me when they see something on the news about 'Killing Rates are UP in Mexico'....and they wonder how I can live here. That´s usually the first notice I get of any violence going on!

Same for us LindaRose. After 12 years we constantly get the “are you crazy” refrain from family and friends. We simply respond we have never had any issue with our personal security and feel far safer here in Mexico than our previous home in Atlanta.
“If it bleeds it leads”, explains much of this misinformation. Sad. |

RE: Article about increase in murder rates in state of GTO
Two things: 1. I didn't think that the Economist article provided much insight. Instead of talking about AMLO, Meade, and Anaya, they should be talking about the candidates for Governor, Rodríguez Vallejo, Camarena (the ones with all the billboards), Sánchez Garcia, Padilla, and Solórzano. The only local politician they talked to was the mayor of Irapuato.
2. Perspective in this is always a problem. If you read http://www.borderlandbeat.com/ (which I do), you would think that it wasn't safe to go to the grocery store once a week without an armed escort. But this site is national in scope. Supposed there were a similar site for the US, that covered cop killings in Detroit, gang violence in LA, drug violence in Miami... they would be putting up articles faster than you could read them. A web site about school shooting alone would be almost as busy as Borderland Beat. |
