Now that we have a new President
Has anyone heard of any backlash that might be heading the way of U.S. citizens residing in Mexico due to Trumps proposed harsh immigration laws in the USA. Does anyone think Mexico might hit back and make it tougher for temporary and permanent residents or those planning to go that route. I really don't know what to think but it wouldn't surprise me.

RE: Now that we have a new President
Make Mexico Pay for the Wall -- one of Trump's plans was to 'tax' remittances. What defines these? What if you keep your funds in a US bank and withdraw them as you need in Mexico via a local ATM? Would your US bank upon receiving a withdrawal transaction entry from a Mexican ATM have to immediately assess/collect Trump's wall tax from your US account?

RE: Now that we have a new President
1. If anything, Mexico would encourage more US immigration, although I wouldn't be surprised to see some fee increases. The simple fact of the matter is, we put money into the economy.
2. Drumpf's idea of taxing remittances is ridiculous and unenforceable. For one thing, Western Union would scream bloody murder. For another, people would easily figure out ways to bypass it. If nothing else, couriers bringing down suitcases full of cash would work. |

RE: Now that we have a new President
Remember that Trump has flip flopped on many of his stances to get elected. And many of the radical, conservative actions he proposes require laws be passed and that special interests may not be happy with loss of inexpensive labor and loss of revenues by spiting it's southern trade neighbor. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic that like most of what Trump spouts is just rhetoric. Just remember to extend kindness to those most impacted by this election, your neighbors.

One benefit (I guess) is the peso now hovering near 21 to a dollar after sitting at 18 for months.
Now just stay out of the Tourists traps shopping/eating wit the locals. |

RE: Now that we have a new President
Trump's strategy is based on having legislation passed that would ban, totally, or otherwise Restrict banks or financial intermediaries from making remittances to Mexico. Such legislation currently exists against Somalia and other "terrorist" states. With this in hand he effectively could blackmail the Mexican government to do his bidding, Pay for wall?, or he shuts off the money leaving the USA.
Likely? No. Possible? Yes. |

RE: Now that we have a new President
I have suggested that México's reaction should be one of generosity:
"Mexican Immigration invites and welcomes--free of fees of any kind--a refuge to elderly Americans receiving Social Security payments." This initiative would greatly benefit the Mexican economy and would seriously damage the anti-immigrant policy of President Trumpolini. --doyle (i can dream, can't i?) |

Quote:"Mexican Immigration invites and welcomes--free of fees of any kind--a refuge to I argue against eliminating fees, but say, reduce them to around $200; enough for applicants to demonstrate that they're serious. (I learned the hard way, a few years back, that when you make something free, people think that it isn't worth anything.) More important is to drastically reduce the amount of paper shuffling that goes with immigration (as well as IMSS or Seguro Popular). For demonstrating income, proof of Social Security or Canada Pension Plan/Old Age Security should be sufficient. One set of fingerprints should be enough. |

Best thing to do though until something changes is to keep the TV off US News and Internet links away from the same. The best way to deal with Trump is to know he is there and we are here and the world we live in is still a delightful one "menos Trump" :-) :-) :-)
