RE: hiking from Santa Rosa
Looking on google earth and various maps, the shortest route appears to be to head southwest after you get off the bus in Santa Rosa. There are a couple of streets through town that get you to a road heading due south. After you go through a little village a few miles south of Santa Rosa the route is less populated and you eventually skirt Presa de Mata on it's west side. From there it's not to far into Guanajuato. This route is all gravel road. I would bet you could hike cross-country into Guanajuato if that is your goal. I have bushwhacked around in the hills near Guanajuato and the terrain, brush, and cactus are not much of a problem.
As far as whether it is recommended to hike down that road I cannot tell you. Hopefully some locals will chime in. When I was studying spanish at Escuela Mexicana about 10 years ago I believe I heard about an hiking excursion from Santa Rosa to Guanajuato. I had walked the highway up to Valenciana a couple of times, and that was a nightmare, so I always wondered about their route. After snooping on Google Earth, I'm pretty sure they took the route that I described. |
