Looking for a rental
We are a newly retired couple coming to GTO in mid January for at least a month. Mario and I have visited once before but hope to really get to know the city and surrounding area this time. We are hoping to find somewhere to rent at a reasonable price. We will be without a car so need to be in walking distance to the bus. Any suggestions on a place would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to meeting some of you when we arrive.

RE: Looking for a rental
We found our place through Casa Solaris - http://www.realestateinguanajuato.com.mx

It is very centrally located and we are very happy not to have a car. Taxis are inexpensive and buses are plentiful. It's really a walking town, so bring good shoes!

Welcome to Guanajuato!

Thanks sailsequoyah. We are excited to spend quality time in the area. We will check out your suggestion when we get there. We are hoping to find something that is relatively inexpensive yet within walking distance to the downtown area. My sturdy shoes are packed!

You might also take a look a airbnb. Rents are relatively low here, but they are inversely proportional to the climb.

That is, the further up a hill, the lower the rent. You can walk down from just about anywhere, but walking up can be a challenge and taxis are not able to go to some areas. Also, the funicular is not running, so any rental that says it is easily accessible using that may need to be negotiated.

The biggest problem with guanajuato is leaving. Once here, it becomes unthinkable.

Welcome, and i hope we make your acquaintance once your arrive!

I'm curious. How hard will it be to find a good place to stay if we wait until we get there? Even though we have visited, I don't have a good enough understanding of the town to know which areas would be a good choice for us.

RE: Looking for a rental
I am relatively new to the area so don't really know about demand at that time of year, but there do seem to be a lot of airbnb options. I agree with you that you should wait to get something more long term until you get here. It is impossible to gauge the area (or the climb) based solely on a map or description.

We know several people that got an airbnb or casa solaris vacation rental for a week while they looked for something else. Rentals seems to move very quickly here, but there are signs in different parts of town that you wouldn't know about unless you wandered nearby. Craig's list also often has some listings.

I guess that if you find something you really fall in love with, take it. But if nothing calls your name, do something very short term to start off.

When we first got here, I was adamant about not staying in el centro, but I rapidly changed my mind and wouldn't have it any other way at this point, but everyone is different.
