What Are the Duties of a Consul General? By Felicia Blue, eHow Contributor , last updated June 25, 2014 A Consul General plays an essential role in building strong ties between his home country and the country he resides in. This person is responsible for promoting his country's interests, such as trade and tourism. The Consul General also works with his home country's citizens or nationals to make sure that they know and obey the foreign country's laws and rules. Below are some of the duties that a Consul General performs. Issues and Renews Passports The Consul General issues and renews passports for his home country's citizens. He also issues these travel documents to foreigners who want to visit or live in his home country. Notarizes Legal Documents The Consul General is also able to validate legal documents, such as affidavits, Articles of Incorporation or contracts, for her fellow nationals. She also performs these tasks for foreign businesses that want to do business in her home country. Meets with Fellow Nationals The Consul General will regularly meet with fellow nationals to discuss and handle issues that might affect them. In the United States, for example, one of the topics he is likely to discuss is immigration. He will also provide referrals and other kinds of assistance that will help the nationals. In addition, the Consul General meets with nationals who are in jail or prison. He may be able to advise and suggest the proper legal representation. The Consul General also works with businesses and organizations in creating labor agreements. That way, his fellow nationals can travel to the foreign country and work or attend school for certain periods of time. Forms Partnerships with Nonprofit Organizations The Consul General works closely with volunteer organizations that are interested in helping her country. For example, the Consul General can assist and coordinate with the organizations that want to donate their services, such as training, health care and education. In addition, she can also help in making sure that the supplies, including medical equipment, educational items, children's supplies and computers, can easily get into his country. Promotes the Country The Consul General forms diplomatic relationships with his country's embassy and Consulates General in the country that he resides in. On a regular basis, the Consul General meets with local government officials and business leaders to promote trade in his country. They would like to meet with the local U.S. citizen community to discuss U.S.Embassy services and any issues or questions community members would like to raise. All U.S. citizens are invited.
