Those of you who have been here for a few years, or followed this forum for a few years, will remember Doug Bower and his irate, ignorant, and idiotic Internet rants about Guanajuato. He finally went into hiding a couple of years ago, disappearing not only from Guanajuato but also from the Web.

Now, unfortunately, Doggie Bow-wow is back, by no popular demand, with a new blog at http://www.askgringoman.blogspot.mx/ . The emphasis is on crime, which will come as no surprise to those who know his work. He's always exaggerated crime in Guanajuato, and we can expect him to take advantage of the recent spate of burglaries and so on to remind us that he predicted them.

In fact, the first post on his new blog (at the bottom of the page) is a copy of the Gtolist post made earlier this month by yanajon, after his house was burglarized. Bower does not indicate whether he sought or received permission to copy yanajon's words, but at least he credits yanajon and Gtolist. It has been suspected for some time that Bower "lurks" on Gtolist; now we know.

Another element of the new blog that will be no surprise to those familiar with Bower is that, unlike virtually every other blog on the planet, it has no room for reader comments. That is because Bower brooks no disagreement. He alone knows the truth about life in Guanajuato. If you disagree with him--and you will--you are a "gringolandian." Also, you're engaged in a conspiracy against him and even trying to kill him.

Think I'm exaggerating? Read his old stuff, to which he links. Or ask him yourself. Oh, wait. The blog is called "Ask the Gringo Man," but there's no way to ask him anything!

I also note, on the new blog, that Bower appears to believe that Felipe Calderón is still the president of Mexico. That's the sort of up-to-the-minute reporting and attention to detail you can expect from this new venture.

Hilarious.
When my wife and I initially thought of moving here I started doing research from Canada and came across some of his writing online. After downloading and reading I really didn't understand why he lived in Guanajuato at all, he seemed to have such a negative take on so many things.

CORRECTION:

I was wrong in my earlier post when I wrote that Bower's new blog "has no room for reader comments." Looking more closely, I now see that there is a faint "comments" link following each post. My apologies for the error.

The "comment" link leads to a separate page, where you'll find this: "Play nice with your comments or you'll get in trouble. . . . All comments must be approved by the blog author."

With his previous blogs, Bower seldom allowed comments of any kind, and he never allowed comments that disagreed with him, even from those who "played nice."

Perhaps he's changed.

Thanks Don for the much needed warning. On our first visit here, now 8 years ago, we were given a copy of a book by this fellow as a suggested guide and intro. What a dose of crap! It was inaccurate, hateful and the writing skill might be that of a lagging 3rd grader. Your description aligns perfectly with that initial impression of the "author".

Hey folks - let's give Doug a break here. He was indeed a character, not the best writer and less so an editor but, in his sort of long past time, he provided both fuel for the fire and a bit of entertainment.

I think The Duck's comment is more in line with the Gtolist spirit than DC's initial blast, but glad Don took the trouble to follow up with a correction.

Hey, admin. I understand your impulse to “give Doug a break,” to essentially ignore him, but I can’t take his new blog so lightly. His old blogs served a seething stew of anti-Mexican, anti-“Gringo,” and anti-Guanajuato lies and hysteria, and the new blog dishes more of the same old swill. You and I know his stuff is drivel, but not everyone does. He’s always been a prolific blogger, and his rants get picked up by other blogs and newsletters all over the Web. Hard as it is to believe, some people who stumbled upon his old blogs actually bought his blather (some even bought his self-published books!) and then scrapped their plans to visit Guanajuato.

I love Guanajuato and hate to see it dumped on. Also, as you know, I own both a house and a vacation rental here, and I won’t stand by while Bower trashes our city and hacks away at property values. Don’t worry: I don’t intend to give daily updates on his daily ravings. But I may from time to time alert Gtolisters to his more egregious excretions.
