absorbing slideshow on Diego Rivera creating mural
The Rivera mural in Detroit it now celebrating it's 80th year... Wonderful pictures and text from the Detroit News, as forwarded by Phil of Morelia from the Michoacan_net list.
(copy & paste) http://apps. detnews.com/ apps/multimedia/ gallery.php? id=15779 Well worth the time, whether your interest is the behind the scenes look at creating the mural Diego considered his best, US politics at the time, Frida's early paintings or of course Diego himself. Could hardly be better. |

It works if you copy and paste like this: (without http://)

Yes! There were also a couple of extra spaces in the originally posted URL that made it not work. Thanks, Raquel, for posting this wonderful slide show.

Thanks, Barbara. And now I know who two of the true culture-vultures are in our fair city.

Great, never knew about this Detroit "period" in their lives. The one photo of Frida alone is simply breathtaking. Thanks for sharing.

Which photo, JESM? The one that really captivated me was the newspaper picture of Frida with Diego's assistant. She is wearing a classic all-silver Navajo "squash blossom" necklace. Though she was, of course, always fond of ethnic clothing and jewelry, I don't believe she ever traveled in the American Southwest (Arizona or New Mexico) where such things were available from trading posts and Fred Harvey stores along the Santa Fe Railroad. I'd love to know the story of how she came by that necklace!

About the 20th image in the slideshow. Her leaning on a low wall with his mural work in the background. I would paste here if I knew how. There is something in that face, contentment, pride, love? Regardless she was so beautiful both in body and spirit and this shows it.

RE: absorbing slideshow on Diego Rivera creating mural
I didn't know about the Detroit period either or although I was born there, lived there as a baby, and often went with my family to visit relatives there when I was a child. When an aunt died, maybe 25 years ago, I was there again. The inner city is dismaying, destroyed by the decline in auto production and earlier post WWII prosperity which "enabled" most people who could afford it to move to the suburbs. Now I think it would almost be worth going back to see the mural.
Squash blossom necklace--maybe a gift or picked up by Frida in an antique shop? Let us know if you find anything out, LaC. |
