A weird question re bunnies

No, not Playboy Bunnies - sorry guys!

We are planning an early 2013 move and I've been researching the issue of bringing pets into MX.

We'll be driving across a border in TX (probably Nuevo Laredo - unless anyone has another suggestion?)

Our "family" includes 2 adults, 1 tiny Chihuahua, 2 cats, and 3 bunnies.

The bunnies are all spayed/neutered, regularly seen by an exotic vet, and are pampered and cherished family members. They are all tidy, litterbox trained, intelligent, funny, and live indoors where they cruise around, hop on the sofa, beg for food, etc. They are truly wonderful.

My concern is a 2010 advisory I stumbled onto online that stated that MX would NOT allow pet (or any) rabbits into the country due to an outbreak of a disease. There was one case in Minnesota.

VHD is a pretty rare disease, something more likely to happen to an animal living outdoors, or raised for food.

If you are still with me :-) do you think I'll have a problem crossing if we have everyone in carriers with the appropriate veterinary forms and declarations of good health?

If you are an "animal person" you will understand that I can't leave my "kids." I'm not up for moving to Nicaragua just yet so I really hope this won't be a problem.

are you near a Mexican consulate? You may have to wait in a long line but their answer would be the best and most up-to-date--if you get the right person to talk to.

Thanks, Doyle! I live in San Diego and, yes, we have a consulate. A dear friend, a native speaker from Xalapa, is going to call tomorrow to try to get the scoop. I can't even tell you how devastated I will be if this is going to be a problem.

The rule makes no sense at all.
