Car rental at the airport

Hi all.

Thanks for all the help on the scam issue. That appears to be in the past now. My money did not get picked up, and it is back in my bank account now.

I am planning on not bringing my car to Gto. I had wanted to, because there are a LOT of places in Mexico I want to visit. But then I considered renting a car when I truly need one. I looked up car rentals on Orbitz, and there were some definitely affordable rentals available at the airport.

I have two questions:

1.) Does a rental at the airport require a flight associated with it? I don't think so, but want to ask, anyway.
2.) Are there closer in or cheaper car rental agencies? If so, does anyone have any recommendations?

I don't think I will need a car for a bit, because I plan on exploring Gto itself for quite some time. But eventually I will, so I thought I'd ask now.

The only rental company I have Not heard bad things about is Europacar. Now that includes all the major US ones.
I have not rented a car personally in Mexico for about 20 years. I travel almost exclusively by bus.Premiere/First class buses are excellent in Mexico. Most have reclining seats much like first class airline seats, Movies, AC, Banos ect. I especially like the double deckers. I get a seat in the first upper row, put my feet up on the dash enjoying the sights.
As an Example I took the bus Zihuatanejo to Guanajuato changing in Morelia. It was a 6 hour trip on Autovias & EtN.

Yes, I've ridden the buses in Mexico, too. Except for free drinks ETN and Primera Plus are about the same as 1st class on airlines.

I will ride buses when it works for me.

But I also know sometimes it won't.

Though not a newbie to Mexico, I am a newbie to Gto, and any Gto inputs are appreciated. I've visited Mexico about a dozen times and traveled a decent amount within the country. I am quite enamored of Mexico, and Gto is the crown jewel.

I am, actually, coming to live in Gto cold turkey. Though I've tried to visit it in the past something always came up and I never made it. I hope it works out, because it is such a beautiful city. The few of you who are there already have good taste, I think. I can't get over how lovely the town is. If it is not as lovely in person, I will be sore disappointed!

And it is certainly a city in which a car is not a requirement. And it is great Mexico has so many bus lines, going everywhere.

I can't wait to arrive.

In my 13 years experience helping my tour clients at the coast (Manzanillo, Colima area) rent vehicles when they needed them I have found that all rental agencies with airport rental kiosks also have rental offices in town. If that is also the case here I'd assume that they would have their offices in Leon not in Guanajuato. In my experience the price was always a bit better in town than at the airport.

I also found that the insurance was often as much as, if not more than, the daily rental rate advertised for the vehicle. I always advised my people to take the insurance because if something were to happen they wouldn't want to be without it. If you are considering using vehicle rental insurance that is included as a benefit with a gold or platinum credit card get something in writing from the insurer confirming that the coverage extends to Mexico.

I would suggest to save yourself the hassle of leasing, cost of insurance, etc. I?ve sent you a PM with a bunch of info. I also have a driver available than can pick you up for about $450 pesos, as long as we can plan it in advance. Check out your PMs for more info, or give me a call.
