Water Update
The discussion of water service here on the Gtolist has apparently caught the attention of Simapag and compelled it to swift action. According to both the Correo newspaper and Simapag's own website, a new water-distribution scheme will soon take effect.

The main difference is that each of the two zones will now have water for a period of 36 hours, followed by no water for 36 hours. (Previously, the scheme was 24 hours on, 48 off.) Simapag's calendar indicates that this will go into effect fully on Saturday at noon, when Zona 1 will begin 36 hours of water service, while Zona 2 will begin 36 hours of no water. Simapag expects this scheme to last about three months.

Sounds simple, right? But wait . . . In the Correo article, Simapag's director says water will be available in both zones on the weekends during the holiday period. If that's true, then I guess the scheme described above will go into effect on Monday. Or something like that. But if that's the case, why hasn't Simapag updated its calendar accordingly? ?Qui?n sabe?

In any case, it should be interesting to see if our actual water service bears any resemblance to the newly outlined scheme. In the meantime, I for one will heed laconstance's words of wisdom: "When we have water, we have it; when we don't, we don't. Simple! Easy to understand!"

It may also help to remember a 1960s slogan: "Save water, shower with a friend."

RE: Water Update
Reporting in from Zone 1 at 5:15 on Thursday:

According to the latest water schedule, I am supposed to have water now, but don't. According to the revised schedule of yesterday, I was supposed to have water, beginning at 4 P.M., but didn't. That calendar of SIMAPAG certainly is colorful! I guess my next opportunity for water is Saturday, and I am keeping my fingers crossed. Meanwhile, I am doing the only sensible thing and switching completely to tequila, while cultivating a burro Buddha-like sense of calm and patience.

By the way, does anyone actually believe that SIMAPAG workers are going around with wrenches (or whatever) and switching around the water delivery mains? How many people would it take to do that all at once? Nice picture, though.

RE: Water Update
My family moved to GTO from Arizona after a professor, who shared the Nobel Prize in ecology in 2007, stated that Arizona would suffer the most of any US state from a lack of water. Arizona highly encourages "water harvesting" - the catching and storing of rain water for later use using a very wide variety of methods. I'm curious, does anyone know what laws, rules, suggestions, or comments SIMAPAG or the Mexican government might have released regarding water harvesting?

RE: Water Update
Jacquie, you can find Simapag's suggestions for water conservation and harvesting listed alongside its calendar, which was linked to earlier. Here's the link again. All the suggestions are obvious, common-sense stuff that's probably already occurred to all of us.

RE: Water Update - a beard contest?

In el Correo today

. . ?No te afeites!

si la poblaci?n afeitadora de Guanajuato es igual a cerca de 40.000 hombres, entonces esta cantidad de agua ser? salvo;

40kX 47L/d =1,880,000 L/diario y 225,660,000 sobre 120 dias = 90 rellenos de la alberca ol?mpica (50m x 25m x 2m)
