"New" No-Pets in Cabin Law
For those of you who regularly travel with pets in the cabin of an aircraft to and from Mexico I want to pass along this information if you are not already aware of the new enforcement of an old law. Look at this website for updates.

RE: "New" No-Pets in Cabin Law
The way I read it from several sources thus far no one seems to be able to find any sort of law on the books that bans pets from flying in the cabin on international flights, although there is some old rule regarding pets in the cabin on domestic flights. My money is on the airline cash grab for this one because they charge more to put a pet in the cargo hold than in the cabin - plus at last word Canadian airline Westjet were still accepting in cabin pets on their flights so why can they allow it and the others can't?
The airlines do listen to their customers - Ryan Air in Europe even provide Kid Free Flights because enough people asked for them. Each to his own but personally I'll take nice quiet pets over screaming hyperactive brats in the cabin with me any day. So...if you want to see pets back in the cabin sign the petition at this link http://www.thepetitionsite.com/897/179/2...to-mexico/ |

RE: "New" No-Pets in Cabin Law
I found this information on a friend's facebook page:
Hey, if any of you crazy kids with your newfangled Tweeter-machines wanted to point them at this guy and Tweeter a polite request (English is OK) that he change the new rules regarding in-cabin pets on international flights in and out of Mexico, I promise to stop hassling you about your music and your saggy pants. RE: "New" No-Pets in Cabin Law
I don't know what to do. From what I have read and heard from customer service at ALL the airlines (I got email responses), ALL of them now don't accept pets in-cabin IN or OUT of Mexico!
I am stuck in Guanajuato, was planning on returning in Sept. I am running out of money and have no idea what to do. This is very upsetting. I have a 14 yr. old cat and she would never survive cargo hold, nor would I even attempt that. This is outrageous. I don't know what to think. Sure, it's a greedy airlines situation, but does this ban or does it not, include flights OUT of Mexico back to the US? I have no definitive information. So lost!!! And starting to get a little nervous and panicky about it. |

Emmagirl:
You ask, "Does this ban or does it not, include flights OUT of Mexico back to the US?" Yes, it does. So here's what you do: First, stop panicking. These new airline policies apparently took effect just a couple of weeks ago. Lots of people are protesting them, so perhaps the airlines will change them. If you're not leaving till September, there's hope. If on the other hand the airlines don't change their policies, try this: Find a ride to the border. How? By advertising your need on Gtolist, mentioning your willingness to share expenses and the driving. Then, once across the border, catch a plane or a bus or rent a car for the remainder of your trip. If you and your cat want to return to Mexico, repeat the above in reverse. Don |

and echoed in the Washington Post article Barbara's comment links to CaboGal wrote: 6/11/2012 3:30 PM CDT I'd rather fly with a plane full of animals than one bratty little whining child anyway. No one seems to have sympathy for those of us having to put up with misbehaved children during our flights. I have found a solution to the annoying whining crying kids problems on flights and now that I have two little ones of my own [who at 10 months old made a round trip from MEX to BKK to BJX] - it no longer bothers me at all. The 28 hour trip actually seemed to go by more quickly than normal as I always had something to do [sleep not being an option] So for all those kid haters out there [I'm sure you were the lovliest of children in your time -or- did you just skip childhood? make sure you fork over the ever extra fees to get seat assignments as far from us as possible - 1st Class maybe? No, that's not safe either as for some incomprehensible reason the gate agent in MEX told me she was 'changing our seats' and then handed us boarding passes for 1A and 2A - nice ride at least to SFO where we had to move to the back of the bus for the rest of the trip. |

I just received an email saying that pets will again be allowed in cabin to and from Mexico starting in September some time.

SEEN ELSEWHERE ON THE WEB
expat exchange RVGRINGO replied on June 18, 2012 with: The ban is in effect. People find air travel miserable enough these days; not at all the pleasure that it was 40 years ago. Those with allergies are happy with the ban; it is bad enough having to breathe recirculated air and share every virus onboard. I guess passengers may still have to put up with smelly, noisy babies though. :) If you want to travel with pets, drive your own car and stay in 'no tell motels' in Mexico, where regular hotels won't take you either. Traveling with pets seems to be a US phenomenon and isn't common or accepted in many other places. |

RE: "New" No-Pets in Cabin Law
As Marlene wrote, word is going around that the pets ban will be lifted in September. I would emphasize that nothing is certain, but, as I said earlier, there is hope. See this post for more information; scroll down to the June 21 update.
Because nothing is yet certain, I would advise those who wish to travel with Fido or Fluffy to make their voices heard on the issue, by contacting either the airlines or the Secretar?a de Turismo. The article linked above provides links to SECTUR. Don |
