How to Make 800 number calls from Mexico - James Doran - 12-14-2019

Does anyone know how to make 800 number calls from here, Guanajuato, to the USA using a cell phone (Verizon International Plan in this instance)?

Thank you in advance.

Let us know if it works.

This does not work. I saw the same plan on various websites.

I finally figured it out by calling my son who then patched in the 800 number and merged the calls so I could talk to the business I needed to talk to.
convoluted, but it worked.

I had doubts, thanks for feedback.

I just tried the dirctions at https://www.callforwarding.com/blog/how-to-dial-a-us-800-number-from-mexico/ , and it worked fine.
I'll be specific. The published # for TD Ameritrade is 800-669-3900. So, what I dialed was 001-880-669-3900.
However, there's some more essential information not covered in this document: what to dial if the toll-free # is something other than exactly 800. For example, TD Ameritrade's Spanish-language # is 888-376-4684. For these numbers, refer to https://traveltips.usatoday.com/dial-tollfree-numbers-mexico-61943.html Or, to save you the trouble, here's what it says there:

Replace 1-800 with 001-880.
Replace 1-888 with 001-881.
Replace 1-877 with 001-882.
Replace 1-866 with 001-883.
Replace 1-855 with 001-884.

So, I just dialed 001-881-376-4684, and it worked.

Thank you. I will try it again.

Did you receive any weird billings from your provider regarding these calls? I was warned about that possibility.

Regarding "weird billings": With many (or perhaps all?) Telmex plans, most calls to the U.S. are at no additional cost. But there's one big exception, namely, calls to the 880, 881, etc. numbers. I don't think Telmex says so explicitly, but in my experience they indeed charge for such calls -- about 6 pesos a minute, last time I checked. That can add up, given that one often spends a long time on hold when calling an 800-type number.

For that reason, whenever I need to call a company that uses such a number for customer service, I try to find a non-800 number to call instead. Googling often works. For credit-card companies, there's usually a number on the back of the cards that can be called collect.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

This technique works fine on a regular phone in Mexico. It will ot work on a cell phone, at least with Verizon.
