That's one of the beauties of living in M?xico. And books from Canada and the U.S. don't even have any duty charged, one of the few good things about NAFTA. Note: Books by international shipping from Amazon.com DO have duty charged, as Amazon's normal method of international shipping places only a return address in Germany on the exterior of the package, and Germany is obviously NOT a member of NAFTA. Just a "heads-up". I've been in the bookstore business full-time in M?xico since 1997 and have had a Mexican accountant (LCP) and have paid ALL the taxes that have been due the entire time. Also I'm a full-time publisher and have had to import books to M?xico so know whereof I speak. NO IVA, not ever, and NO duty (Aduana charges) not ever (except the occasional one I have had to get from Amazon and a couple I had to get from Spain). I did have to pay a customs broker to handle one very large shipment of books (almost 1,000 new books), and he didn't believe me about the no IVA and no duty until he checked with Aduana and was told that I was correct. Customs broker charges and shipping charges ARE deductible from income for tax purposes as long as they are correctly invoiced from the foreign suppliers showing the RFC and the name and address as shown on the RFC cedula. Also rent and cost of books (new with correct invoicing or facturaci?n) IS definitely deductible from income as is a minimal monthly salary for you, the bookstore propietaria. Of course, you are correct about transport charges for books. Books are heavy and shipping charges (into OR out of M?xico) are ridiculously expensive. That's why my publishing company has a U.S. warehouse in addition to the one in M?xico. Trying to sell a book that would have to be shipped ANYWHERE out of M?xico would make the transport charges prohibitive. RE: List of non-profit, philantropic, medical, academic, public service contacts, etc - Jzmackenzie - 12-17-2011 Please explain how to avoid IVA on books. Our nonprofit published a book. The proof was sent to use by the USA printer using UPS. We were forced to pay IVA $5.60. I contacted UPS and after weeks of "checking" they assured me that "all books coming into Mexico, regardless of the use intended, require a 17% payment to IVA." RE: List of non-profit, philantropic, medical, academic, public service contacts, etc - NanN - 12-18-2011 I don't know anything about IVA on importing books. I do know however that in Mexico if you file your taxes with Hacienda under the R?gimen de Peque?os Contribuyentes - as I do - then you don't charge IVA to your customers nor are you able to provide them with a 'factura' (the receipt with your Hacienda cedula on it so they can use it as a write off). You can only privide them with a nota (a basic receipt). Under this r?gimen you also can't write off any business expenses even if you have a factura for the expense. My accountant says that the tax rate under this r?gimen is lower to make up for not writing off expenses. I trust my accountant. RE: List of non-profit, philantropic, medical, academic, public service contacts, etc - NanN - 12-18-2011 Got sidetracked there...what I actually opened this thread to post is a recommendation to include the Amigos de los Animales de Guanajuato, A.C. group in the db you are compiling. I don't represent the group but Soleil and I have done some volunteering with them and they are a great bunch that provide much needed spay and neuter clinics (among other things) for the street dogs and the pets of lower income households in the Municipio of Guanajuato. I've worked clinics at the coast with three organizations and I can vouch that the clinic I volunteered at here was well run and real care was taken with the animals being spayed or neutered.
