renewal periods for IMSS & FM3? - raquelita - 06-28-2012
How long before the expiration date can I renew each of these?
Also, is the FM3 procedure different if I have completed 5 years on my current FM3? And do I have to renew the IMSS in person?

FM3 on 6th year is actually a new FM3 You can begin the process upto one month in advance.
IMSS - if it is just a renewal and you'll be away someone can do it in your place - but 1st make sure of the requisitos - like new fotos. The EXTREMELY IMPORTANT thing about IMSS renewals is not to let you membership expire. If that happens they'll re-enroll you but you lose you Sin Restrictiones for a year plus you need to go to the back office for a new book and new clinic assignment.

A friend of mine went to San Miguel on Wed last week to start the new FM3 since this is year 6, or year 1. He was told he needed some kind of letter, not a bank statement, from his US bank. He had bank statements and other things so it should have gone easily. He asked why and was told the law had been changed the Monday before. So he went to Leon this week to see if he'd have better luck. They told him that he needed that letter and also that he could not "renew" until the day following the expiration. Then, since the FM3 has expired, his fine would be 1300 pesos. So... he got the letter FedExed yesterday and we'll see what happens next week after the expiration. Do you suppose that they just don't want the expats anymore? Well, I can't understand staying on an FM3 forever. This friend will ask for an FM2 next year after he has retired. But then, maybe they won't give it to him cuz his year 6 is really year 1. I got mine after 2 years on the FM3, but that's not usual.

Wow, this is an important update. Keep us posted. I wonder if we'll have a month after the FM3 expiration date to "renew."

It will be interesting to see how this works for people who have FM3s and foreign cars here on a temporary permit that they paid a deposit for because if they don't get their proof of renewal into Aduana prior to the current FM3 expiring they will loose their deposits.

Based on our recent INM experience, some good some not, the main thrust of the new immigration law is to shift the application, approval and issuance of all new visas from domestic INM offices (leon, SMA, etc.) to Mexican consulates and embassies around the world. Renewals remain available here, but any new status, for example moving from a tourist 180-day visa to a longer term permisso, must now be done totally outside the country.

Sounds crazy. Having to pass the border to get a stamped piece of paper. Only govts could come up with such insanity.
