old style Mexican furniture - mim - 04-30-2012 I need furniture for the house I rented - a desk, a sideboard for the dining room, plates, etc. I want traditional Mexican furniture. I think they are called muebles colonial or rusticos, the handmade stuff. I know Dolores Hidalgo is known for the tiles, but are the dinnerware from there safe? I'm concerned about lead. Are there any stores in town you recommend that are not outrageously priced? Are there towns/villages closeby that are known for their furniture making, where I can have them made? RE: old style Mexican furniture - mexhapati - 05-01-2012 hello! good to be back on this board... we live in dolores, there are many furniture makers that specialize in the colonial, hand carved style about 10 miles from town is a village called adjuntas del rio where they specialize in mesquite wood furniture, fun day trip give me a call and i will point you in the right direction 4181822098 4181056160 mexhapati ...functional folkart! ..since 1976 RE: old style Mexican furniture - mim - 05-02-2012 I'll call you when I get in town. Thanks! RE: old style Mexican furniture - laconstance - 05-03-2012 There is a rustic furniture place near the Dos Rios glorieta: Go north (away from town) on Calle Alhondiga to the dos Rios glorieta, then bear right toward dos Rios. There are two furniture stores about a block further on, where the street makes an abrupt left curve. Another great carpenter shop is just off plaza San Roque. If you are facing the front of the church, go up the callej?n on the right side. The carpenter ship is just below Positos, on the left. They can make you anything you want. They made the cabinets and closets for my house, and recently made a completely custom-sized desk. Two brothers Mart?n and Jesus run the shop. RE: old style Mexican furniture - mim - 05-04-2012 I'll check them out. Thanks. RE: old style Mexican furniture - mr bill - 05-04-2012 My feelings on Muebles Rustico -at least the run-of-the-mill ones on the side of the road for example is that they are not of the best quality, are made from #2 or worse pine and are more suitable finished with paint instead of stain as pine does not take stain evenly. The pieces you buy are often without hardware [knobs, handles etc] A note on having furniture custom made: be exact in what you want - don't make presumptions. If you presume a drawer will have drawer slides you may find that in the finished piece it does not - maybe doesn't even have a stop to prevent you from pulling the drawer open and onto the floor. Make sure you specify -Exactly- what you want and -Exactly- how you want the piece constructed and finished. Mexconnect article on Cuanajo Michoacan which is a center for Rustico furniture RE: old style Mexican furniture - mim - 05-04-2012 good point. I'll watch out for it. |
